We did for the first time this weekend. In the end, it was by car (after turning back after 2 hours motor sailing because the engine was running hot) for an Owners Association meet.

It's a lovely setting, a nice club with very friendly and helpful Members - the Club is in the old mill and was surprised to see it had a skittle alleys and something I havn't seen for ages and ages - a full sized snooker table - but in this case there were two of them!

Yes, ok, it's a bit of a plug, but I give it unashamedly as they are certainly worth mentioning especially as the entrance has now changed and is much easier to navigate.

Went in about 2 years ago via the old entrance channel (which I knew from my dinghy sailing days) and found not less than 2m of water all the way to the sailing club jetty on a biggish midday tide. Plenty of time for a relaxed lunch stop as the tide stands for a good couple of hours before starting to fall.

Agree: delightful and welcoming. You need to be able to take the mud, but it is pretty soft so keels will sink in. Fender boards are a good idea if you want to berth on the quay. The pub re-opened some time ago and produces excellent food etc (alternative to the club in the old tide mill.) I understand that at very neap tides it is pretty well isolated.

Rather than dry out and be restricted by tide in Ashlett, we often anchor in Owers Lake (next door). It's an interesting walk around to Ashlett Creek, or to Calshot in the other direction. Ashlett sailing club has always provided a very friendly welcome.
If you do anchor in Owers Lake, make sure your anchor is well dug in. I'm sure they have dredged or something because it's all too easy to drag for some reason:o.

I haven't used the original entrance for 4 years and gather that it has been improved, however there is a second entrance near to the red pile and marked with the yellow'X' post, sailing along this line to the next yellow marker post and turning sharply to starboard joins the main entrance halfway along. This would only be suitable for sailing or motorised dinghies at the times for the main entrance routes.

The original entrance is no longer in use and the buoys have been removed. It sounds like the entrance you describe is close to the new entrance. See here: http://www.ashlettsc.com/Docs/Newchannel2.pdf

L'ESCARGOT Sir, thank you for the PDF of the revised entrance. It does look that the route I described is still viable for a dinghy, both yellow posts are shown and it is at position of the last one that the sharp starboard turn is needed for about 20 yards only;but I stress for Dinghies only and boards at 2/3rds depth.
