Not that I know of, but as you get closer to the equator, the wind gets lighter (doldrums) and the water gets warmer (can expect it to reach 30deg C).

Stingo You've just reminded me of something I keep meaning to ask you.
Did you notice the water going in the opposite direction down the wash basin drain when you crossed the Equator?
As you would have sailed at a fine angle, ie more E to W than N to S, presumably this phenomenom was apparent for quite a while.

It's true. Having been brought up in South Africa, I was quite confused to see it going the wrong way around when I moved to the UK.

Absolutely. Even the sun comes up on the wrong side in the Northern Hemisphere.

perhaps she's having the same problem as me, wondering why the wind is going anticlockwise round a high and giving her headwinds when they should be from behind /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That’s funny, last time I read about the, water /plug hole /hemisphere rotation phenomena in New Scientist it said it was total bollocks – but there you are my data bank stands corrected.

back to the original point. i suspect her lack of progress has more to do with the force 2 headwind than any minute differences in viscosity or density of the water (which, incidentally would both tend to increase rather than reduce her speed!)
