I'm looking into possible fitting of some form of artificial teak decking on my Moody 36. As far as I can see there seem to be about 4 teak lookalikes and master teak 2000 which is cork based.

I would like some feedback on experiences of this decking in terms of preferences, fitting and durability?

(We have looked briefly at real teak and the probable price makes that a non-starter.)

TIA

and weight and maintenance...

I've used Treadmaster by James Walker. 15 year life under hard wear, hard to impossible to get off for replacement, quite difficult to fit (you've got to get sufficient epoxide to squeeze out and bead round the edges to seal them - too much or too little NBG). Good sound damping and grip, little insulation effect. Price, can't comment as it's so long ago. Used to be in Woking, now in Gunnislake (I think).

I'm in two minds about mine. About 4.5 sq m of TekDek fitted, cockpit sole, transom steps and cockpit seats.

Hotter than teak in med' summer but soon cooled off by a bucket of water. Good sound deadening properties. Little or no thermal insulation.

Several parts fitted over 2 years, colours are not consistent but I haven't seriously tried scrubbing them up yet.

Would consider using professionally 'prefabricated' sections rather than doing it all myself if i was ever to do it again since one or two places needed recaulking this year. Not a bad or big job just a pain.

Pretty much maintenance free however which is exactly what I was looking for.

I had it fitted a year ago on 45 foot Sea Ray Sundancer. Very happy with the fitting, done professionally and the look of it one year on. Does seem quite warm in the sun, but as said, a bucket of water will fix that.

The main reason for fitting was the slipperyness of the rear platform when boarding from the pontoon, now has very good and safe grip for walking on.

Would buy it again if I changed boats.

We have just had Flexiteek fitted to the cockpit of our Hunter Pilot and are very pleased with it. Looked at others at SBS, but preferred the colour of Flexiteek to the others. Took two visits to the boat, one to template and the other to fit.

Too early to tell about longer term durability, but has improved the comfort and looks of the cockpit dramatically. I also spoke to another HP owner who has had it fitted to his two previous boats and was also pleased.

Hope this helps.
