Teams in this year’s event, which sets off from Alicante, Spain, on October 22, are being given incentives to employ women. Crews may number no more than seven if they are all male, but can expand to nine if they include two women and 10 if the gender split is equal. This lets them sleep longer and gives an advantage when manoeuvring the boat.
Caffari said she knew of women who had been offered cut-rate pay for the eight-month race or even only their travel costs. A junior crew member can usually expect to be paid around £4,000 a month, rising to £22,000 for a skipper.
