Thanks to you all who replied to my first post. The boat is a bilge keel , 33ft, sloop. Just me and my wife as crew. the reply re the tide when leaving penzanse and the use of newlyn was especially useful. We would like to look into some north cornwall places and so the comments on that was appreciated. Anything else you can give me?

I'd send a Private Message or e-mail Humperdinck. By next Monday he'll have been round Land's End three times in the last four weeks in a similar-sized fin keeler. Twice on delivery trips to & from Torquay and once racing in the Triangle Race. It blew a hooli for the Southwards delivery; was [I understand] flat calm for the race. As for the North-bound delivery trip, look at the current Thurs/Fri forecast. Going into ANY North Cornwall port means sacrifing hard-earned Westing.
But it depends how tough your crew is! Better to ship an extra pair of hands for 24-hours than end up in the divorce court. Unattractive as it is, Milford Haven is the only place you can provision the yacht from a full 20-aisle Tesco, wheel the trolley all the way to your berth and return it in ten minutes.

Disagree about your desription of Miford Haven. The actual town and the oil refinery may be unattractive, but there are some beautiful placeswithin the Haven.
Dale is a very comfortable anchorage, and farther up the Haven you have Neyland,Lawrenny and Landshipping up at Picton Point which is probably the most idylic anchorage you could find.Perhaps it is good that the Solent types don't venture that far and therefore preserve its' special charm.

Padstow is one of the nicest, friendliest harbours I've ever been in. Even send you a christmas card every year. And in a good spot to cross to Milford haven. For best results go into inner harbour, through the lock. Apart from Padstow I'd leave North Cornwall alone. All drying harbours and no bolt holes.

No one can force me to come here-----------
