Just discovered prop goes other way. Think I have read somewhere that some gearboxes dont like prolonged in reverse. Simplest solution is if I can run the gearbox in reverse and she will motor ahead. Any reason why not?

You can, but generally reverse gear on most gearboxes further reduces the prop revs in relation to forward.

Depends on the design of the gearbox. The TMC40, as fitted to my Beta, has a maximum reverse contiuous power rating of 33% of the forward rating.
AFAIK, reverse is obtained in this design by introducing a small idler wheel into the gear-train.
Other designs of box, eg; hydraulic and, I think, saildrives, are not restricted in reverse, but not certain of that.

I've only heard about it been done once. A skipper I was racing with told a story about how his gearbox disintegrated on his previous boat. Apparently, a dodgy professional had fitted the wrong prop, so to hide his mistake he reversed the gear change. Owner was oblivious for a few years until the gear box went.

So sounds like it isn't a good idea.
