Some of us are currently stuck in abnormal locations with unfamiliar supermarkets nearby and consuming too much alcohol. Looking after elderly parents whose booze cupboard contains unappetising offerings which date back to the 70s and away from my boat's well-stocked booze locker I'm experimenting with what Sainsbury have to offer. They don't do their fine taste the difference golden rum any more. Their Kirk and Sweeney is a bit bland for the price but the "Don Papa" is surprisingly excellent and wonderful mixed with Bundaberg ginger beer.

What is the forum's evaluation of the current rum offerings from the major supermarkets?

(for reference I don't actually own an "armchair"but I stashed my oh-so-dotcom aeron here when I moved aboard the boat)

I got some 'Rebellion' rum from Aldi, thinking I'd get some reasonably priced stuff in case I wanted to mix it. I find it quite smooth to drink (sip) neat.
I'm not a great spirits drinker, a bottle lasts months in this house, so your taste may differ. 'Taste' is like that, subjective.

The Don Papa is very good, if perhaps a tiny bit too sweet. It's very popular in my pub.

I also like Diplomatico, Venezuelan Rum.

If spiced rum is to your taste, Aldi’s ‘Sea Dog’ did very well in blind taste tests and I like it. Asda also do a very smooth Caribbean spiced rum, the one with the white anchor on the front of the bottle.

Asda own label dark rum is pretty good (tastes like Myers's to me).

They also sell Lambs spiced rum, which is very drinkable and has a nice vanilla flavour.
