Arent wayfarers fun ?

Wayfarers are good looking hard wearing go anywhere and can be trusted to do what is expected of them and never let you down. Oh and I've never seen a wayfarer going around shops spending money faster than I can earn it.

The Wayfarer fleet is getting OLDER !

Losing out to the modern planing and exciting marvels. Pity, I agree that the W is pretty much the ideal 16ft-er dayboat. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

[/ QUOTE ] It's true that new Wayfarer sales are not brilliant, but there is no more modern design that truly replaces it. Laser Stratos is probably the nearest but has some disadvantages. When we sold our Wayfarer all the enquirers were set on a Wayfarer, and weren't considering anything else. Maybe the biggest competitor for a new Wayfarer is a second-hand one!

There is a new Wayfarer design under development by the new builder. It is expected to remain true to the "one design", so that existing boats won't be disadvantaged in racing. There don't don't seem to be any more details available yet.

Good video hope they do one on racing.

We have had some great times doing Falmouth week and the cost of a Wayfarer is about 2% of the big boat yet the fun factor can be many times more!

I am looking forwards to teaching all my Grandchildren to sail in a Wayfarer. They can sail the big boat after but you get so much more feel learning to sail in a dinghy.

Have you read ocean crossing in a wayfarer by frank and margaret dye?

They and other or he and another crew went from southern UK to Iceland then from there to norway in cold stormy gales force 9/10 or more!In a wayfarer

Well in the 1960s sailers were better and tougher?Or something. All the same the wayfares an amazing dingy.

When i got back this year from my summer cruise i dug out their book as it always frightens me to read what they did and makes the fearful bit of my cruise seem tame.
Though this year i was at sea while thor tried to kill me with lighning bolts and tide to keep me from safty?

.. Really - have you seen the price of a new one - kitted out - recently ?

[/ QUOTE ]Second hand are going up in price as well, I see. Maybe we should have asked more for ours! Still less expensive than anything remotely comparable.

I was advised to learn to sail on a wayfarer as it has all the controls most big boats have and has a spinnaker.

We started racing and I thought with a new boat and reading a book we would soon be at the front - no way!!

2 years later I bought another new boat, a plus S, but by then it was to ensure that the only reason we were at the back of the racing fleet was because we were not good enough. The good thing was that I could not blame the boat and we both knew it was down to our sailing. After 5 years we went for a wooden boat. I am not convinced its any faster than a new +S but the keener (and often the better) sailors own them. You cannot accuse me of not trying to buy myself to the front of the fleet!

Yes a new +S racing wayfarer fully kitted out costs circa £10K but a 50 yr old wooden one is just as competitive providing its in a good state of repair and they can be bought about £3k with the immaculate ones only fetching £5k but they do require some maintenance to keep a wooden boat in top condition but what pride you get.

We have been racing on the sea in conditions where the wave height was such that we could only see our competitors position when we were on the top of the wave. The wayfarer can be sailed in conditions where all the new GTI classes of dinghys have packed up and gone home!!

I get annoyed at the frequent postings by owners of MAB's that are so unfairly critical of new AWB's yet must confess to being comparable when considering our now 18yr old wooden wayfarer (and Ospreys/Enterprises etc) with the newer GRP classes. How many of the newer classes will have a following and race in enough numbers to have their own start in 50 yrs time?

Now if people look up my Bio they will see we have a Jeanneau 43 DS the equivalent fully kitted out new one is about £210k so I stick to my statement having seriously missed the racing wayfarer crowd for the last 3 years.

You can have many times more fun at 2% of the cost in a Wayfarer - its a great boat.............but SWMBO likes the shower on the 43DS when we go on holiday so as great a boat as the Wayfarer is it cannot compete in all ways!!!!
