Mega volcano what a load of B**sh**
I am more frightened of the Piracy report. Cant the BBC do a programme on something worthwhile. What a waste of license payers money once again.

I did not realise it was a spoof. Just shows should not shout your mouth off too soon.
I wish we could pay the license fee on a what you watch basis. It would certainly make me read the TV Guide.

Who\'s scaring whom

I know it's a bit bloody paranoic but I'm starting to wonder who is scaring whom and why. There was a prog (which I missed) to this effect on the tele a little while back...but we've had

SARS - it was going to bring about the end of civilisation as we know it - what's happened - naff all - whic hwas easy to predict from the ridiculously low numbers quoted at the time.

MRSA - We're all doomed. But I worked in the NHS back in '79 when it was already known about - not a huge problem.

Terrorists - done to death - literally

Bird flu - could kill 2 million in this country alone (first heard of "bird flu" yonks ago but no sign yet)

Global warming - 's bin bloody cold lately (have you noticed that a prolonged snap of very cold/wet/warm/hot weather is all blamed on GW (Global Warming - not me))

Now SUPERERUPTION (super erection more like). On the tele it was billed as "this is a true story....it just hasn't happened yet.... WAHT! In the paper yesterday it was billed as "factual drama about a possible devastating eruption". Aren't these terms mutually exclusive?

Point is - that the way all of these things a "promoted" (and I use the word advisedly) - people tend to start believing these wild hypotheses as fact.

So... who's doing and why?

Simple- follow the money, as someone wise once said to me. When some thing odd apears to be happening, just look and see who stands to gain from the hype - 99% of the time, theres your answer. Someone somewhere will be hyping something to gain power, money or political advantage

Re: Who\'s scaring whom

I think sometimes there is no alterior motive people just do things because they are thick. Like make these crap disasters that will never happen rubish programmes. like we could do anything about it anyway.

They tell us if the Greenland Ice cap melts the sea levels will rise by such and such. I dont see anyone doing the math on how much more water the atmosphere will hold due to global warming. Probably enough to soak up 5 ice caps.

Re: Who\'s scaring whom

For Christs sake... it was a bloody entertainment programme......

The strap line "A true story that just hasn't happened yet" besides being a crap headline, and an Oxymoron, is marketing rubbish, and not meant to suggest that the world is about to blow up.....

Also, FWIW Spoof means:

spoof

noun

a composition that imitates somebody's style [syn: parody, lampoon, sendup, mockery, takeoff, burlesque, travesty, charade, pasquinade, put-on]

verb

1: make a spoof of; make fun of [syn: parody]
2: make a parody of; "The students spoofed the teachers" [syn: burlesque, parody]

So I stand by my statement ....... it was a spoof......

Aieeeeeeeeeee! Molten Haggis!

I'm also a little mystified that we haven't all succumbed to Mad Cow Disease yet, though there is an argument for citing some of the deranged ramblings to be found on here, as a sign that BSE is a-comin'

Re: Who\'s scaring whom

It had to have been a spoof. Otherwise it was too stoopid for even the BBC.
I think the BBC are in bed with the Pirates I think they get together and think up ways to scare the public while thieving from them.

The bunch of idiots who made that programme must be laughing at us gullable fools out here.

I think you give the BBC too much credit. Like hell it was a spoof they actualy believe that crap.

Re: Who\'s scaring whom

I'm sure the average BBC producer is a rational intelligent decision maker who forms their own opinion.....

I for one really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to this evenings episode.... unless the Canaries collapses in to the sea first, and the tidal wave flattens the transmission network..... oops..... musn't scaremonger.....

I thought that the programme was excellent, as was the follow-up on BBC2 afterwards.

Jimi, they did mention that there was an extinct supervolcano site in Glencoe but I think that they may be confusing the evidence with the results of me eating too many Kendal Mint Cakes during a hill walk in the 60's. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Magic, I totally agree with you about the scare tactics but as for [ QUOTE ]
Hands up who listens to Terry Wogan - he's got it about right I reckon.

[/ QUOTE ] You're kidding, right? ...and why does he have a clone hosting the programme after his breakfast show?

Just another "Look what we can do with computer graphics" it looked like to me. Our of the "Walking with Dinosaurs" stable. Reflects the BBC's idea of its audience's attention span. Are these the same people who had Alan Tichmarsh explaining tectonic plate theory without the use of a single diagram or graphic?
