Bought this home made jardinaire stand from a car boot. The story was that the old lady who had it was on Lord Mountbattens staff. I have since thought that these might be off an old boat. What does anyone think?
I wouldn't necessarily think that they're from a ship. I can buy this sort of thing at our local hardware barn, in various styles and sizes, from table legs to verandah posts. Unfortunately they are invariably made from Monterey Pine [P. radiata] a very poor, but cheap wood. The species of timber is hidden in your case, but if it were one of the species commonly used in marine work, such as teak, it may be a suggestion of a maritime origin. Mahogany would not give the same indication, as it is commonly used in furniture.
