Are old stinkies as much trouble as old raggies?

Having (sadly) spent more time fixing my 22 year old sail boat than actually sailing her this season - I was wondering, would an older (say 20 years) power boat need as much TLC ?

Well not knowing how much trouble old raggies are. It's hard to tell. Suppose we have more than twice as much mending with engines cos theres usualy two of them, much bigger and more complicated ones. But then again we have not got nearly as much string. No long poles, or blankets to darn. however we do tend to be more sofisticated, so have heating to mend, loes, fridges, showers and plumbing. also more elecric thingies and toys. Hydraulic steering and two of them, not just a lump of wood to wiggle about. Then again we dont go in for all those flaggy things for sending up pole on all sorts of strange occasions. We just have one on the back. But only cos it look pritty! Apart that is from the MoBo Chat Show Burgee of course. That is always worn or deap shit.
On the other hand I expect we spend less time in hospital, cos every time I get on a yacht, I'm always bumping into wires, tripping over string or banging my head on the poles. Usually all the lot at the same time!! Hmm not sure which need more mending. Hopfully we'll find out.

Bought a Princess 32 of 1974 vintage this year and spent most of the season on the water. Had some work to do but nothing that interfered with our cruising. Guess the common element will be the shedload of dosh required to keep things going.

Wise words as usual Haydn...

However, I dispute the hospital thing though - well apart from coming down the companion way face first, slipping and hitting small of back on step ... ouch. (on 2 occasions - slow learner)

You stinkies MUST spend more time in hospital...

1) You get where you're going SO fast, so you're in the pub a good 6 hours ahead of us raggies so liver failure has got to be a favourite. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

2) Stinkie women getting off boats in high heels - surely, recipe for disaster... /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

3) Constant inhalation of fumes (tee hee) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

4) Cardiac arrest everytime you're given the bill for fuel.../forums/images/icons/mad.gif

5) Compound spine fractures bouncing over waves at 30 knots. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

need I go on ?

Main difference I would think ,when stinkies bits give up it is a single instantaneous loud expensive bang.Where as your lot sort of fall apart quietly in gradual sort of way.

lets go over there I am sure I saw a blue bit of sky

Having had both sail and power I would say stinkies are probably more trouble than raggies on balance. Cant remember any major traumas with any of my sailing boats but Im rapidly getting p*ss*d off with the number of weekends this year something else has reared its ugly head to tax my patience.
Latest development this weekend - down to Hampton Court yesterday cos swmbo likes it there - good trip down and no apparent probs.
Time to leave this morning and no starter motor life on starb'd engine so yet again single engined trip back up river - Im becoming real expert at handling single engine port side drive only!
Thinking of having a special flag made only to be flown at end of problem free trips - it will probably last for ever cos wont see much use !!!!!!!

Yep. But if you had been a raggy. You would have had to go back with no engines. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif Can just see you trying to sail through the locks!!

Let me get this straight...............is the only reason for having two engines so that you'll at least have one that works?

(And JFYI I reckon I could have made a pretty good stab at sailing back (locks and all) if Id been a raggy!)

Brings back memories of a regal I had, just one long drip drip of problems.
All down to lack of maintaince of previous owner.
The lesson learnt which I put to good use when buying my present boat,If the previous owner has not spend a fortune on keeping the boat in good order and can prove it mechanics wise (not that bothered by hull) then offer him sod all for it and walk away.
There are dozens more just like it out there.
You will only be buying his stored up grief so get it cheap. or not at all.
Most boats I looked at were just big bills awaiting a new owner.
But out in a marina somewhere is the right boat you have to just go and find it.

Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner, trust me.

Totally agree with you ! I did get the boat cheap and I naturally expected to have my work cut out for a while getting things sorted. I'm still at the stage of working on the obvious that needs doing but keep getting caught out by mainly little things which arent immediately obvious ! I'm feeling slightly less agrravated this morning !!!

Bridges no probs but one or two lock cuts could be a bit of a b*st*rd if the winds coming from the wrong direction. Am I allowed to stoke up on baked beans before the event?

<font color=red>Byron</font color=red>, why didn't you just let a bit of water in so it was lower in the water. Then you wouldn't ahve a problem with the bridges!!!!!

or you can do it froggy style, he went straight through the bridges and had to replace the arch and radar (twice).

I believe it was Marlow and Sonning.
