hello,

I know many of you are not v.fond of this co (to put it mildly) but as I've said before whatever I've bought off them was fine, so I'm happy.

My Garmin autopilot ECU failed and they are the only ones that list an ECU for sale.
However, the email I sent bounced back (mailbox full), hence this post.

So, are they still in business, have they moved premises, what's going on?

Needless to say, if someone has a s/h GHP10 autopilot ECU for sale, I'm interested, let me know :D

cheers

V.

ok thanks,
based in Greece I'd rather avoid the call if I can get through email (which doesn't seem to work)

I'll try again tomorrow if not will call them

cheers

Vas,
I'm about to replace my Garmin a/pilot. The heading sensor has apparently broken so I intend to buy a whole new "Reactor" a/pilot, probably a Garmin GHP Reactor Hydraulic Core Pack / 010-00705-15. The only thing stopping me is working out the backward compatibility because I want to keep (I) same hydraulic pump plus (ii) same cable that connects the black box near the rudders to the black box near my lower helm (with the heading sensor in it). Keeping those two things is a big deal, obviously. I just haven't had the time to trawl thru the information online to establish that his can be done, and what exactly I need to buy.

If you're expert in this, please feel free to tell me what I should buy!

Anyway, point is, you are welcome to my old stuff FOC. I'll just mail it to you. I don't know what model it all is, but the (suspect broken) heading sensor gizmo is the one that is sort of globe shaped. The grey box near the rudders is all fine. It's all 2013 equipment obviously

BTW, I like coastal rides. Bought loads of stuff from them.

Want me to phone them and check if they are monitoring their email?

John,

thanks for the offer, BUT:

to upgrade and get rid of your broken heading sensor (the ball) you need only to change the ball thing with the new reactor, apparently you don't need to change the ECU. I assume you have the 2lt pump and not the fancy massive smartpump, as in that case it doesn't seem to need an ECU.
HOWEVER (and you wont like that) you have to change the ECU to ball (now reactor) interconnect which is a bummer. On Match that must be a good 10-12m say 15m to be safe.
Dunno if it's worth it, or whether you should simply buy a ball and plug it in and rerun the sea wizard!

Before you do anything, what are the symptoms? boat moving ahead, and GHC20 icon skewed to right or left? Does it come with a message? Trying to debug the problem I have on my system (which is a pick and match job from various ebay sources...) I noted a few mentioning their heading sensor went bad. Some reported that a firmware update solved their problems as did a re-run of sea wizard. So don't necessarily write the one you have off.
FWIW, reruning the wizard involved turning the system to dealer mode. You can easily check if you are already in dealer mode at the setup menu on any GHC20. If you're not, you need to power off the system and keep *I think* the central and right softkey depressed while hitting the power button.

Do the f/w upgrade, do a factory reset on the a/p, do the wizards again (write down vital statistics first or you'll be searching for wheel pump capacity...) and try it out it may work and it's definitely cheaper and easier than ripping upholstery, opening conduits and routing cables again...

cheers

Ah, thanks Vas. I see. Yep, changing that cable is non starter on my boat. Would take me ages to remove and refit all the panelling.

OK, so I will try what you say. I did a full firmware upgrade on the SD card but that didn't cure it, but the wizard re-run might

If no success I will buy a new GHP10 autopilot, and use the new ball-thing from that. They are still available http://www.marinesuperstore.com/aut...MI9Om7hrGk1QIVgb3tCh1i_wN0EAQYASABEgI6JvD_BwE. If I do this I'll happily send you the "leftovers" - ie everything but the ball

FWIW, symptoms are that the thing says a heading that is nothing like reality. Doesn't fluctuate much but is fixed in the 40-50 degrees sort of zone and does vary +/-10 degrees (slowly rather than erratically) even as the boat holds a constant heading. I can therefore use heading hold, just, and with close supervision. But I but cannot easily use radar and cannot use goto a waypoint at all. Obviously the icon on the plotter points a different way from the boat's heading. No error messages at all.

Definitely do the wizard! Quite a few cases are reported on various forums where things worked fine after a rerun of the sea wizard. Symptoms were similar to yours btw.
You obviously have checked the ball and that nothing has changed down there, like someone hanging a steel pendulum just above the ball

BTW, now that I got your attention, I emailed you asking about James stabs and which one I should get for MiToS. If it's lost, I can email you again (or PM if you wish). I think I posted at the beginning of July.
I'm leaning towards the older analogue Vosper mini, chopping the stabs a bit and redoing the control thing on arduino/raspberry or whatever such board. Your opinion is very much welcomed (well, it's actually vital!)

OK thanks. I will re-run the wizard. Garmin emailed me privately and offered to send me a new ball/CCU, but asked me to re-run the wizard first, and sent me instructions for doing that. Their after-sales support remains best in the business. And no I have not placed a new lump pf steel near the ball!

Stabs - sorry I owe you a reply. Been too busy (new job, new country of residence, etc, all takes a lot of time!). Will do now...

not in a great hurry as work will be done during winter, just so that James knows what I'll get.

I ordered a fresh water pump to Spain and paid for delivery by Thursday, it came on Tuesday night and I called them direct so very pleased in deed!

I emailed CR yesterday evening and got a full mailbox bounce. However, received a reply from Paul on his phone at 11:30 so they are partly getting through.

Vas, when I call Paul today I'll check he's received your email.

Pete,

I also got a reply yesterday lunch time from Kester, so yes, they are working, just a glitch with their email server. Ordering the ECU today.
