Are BMW engines in Fairline Corniche a problem??

I am looking for a Fairline but am advisedto beware BMW deisels as the legs are troublesome. Is this true? Can you get parts or change the legs?

Don't know about the legs! but the main problem with buying BMW engines is that BMW tried to get into the marine industry a few years back, I guess hoping that they could beat Volvo to the business! it didn't work and after only a few years pulled out of the marine market! so its very difficult buying BMW marine spares and people don't really want to purchase boats with BMW engines now! because they are hard to sell!

There's a place in Canada, V12 Engineering that specialises in these things.

They have some "friendly" service centres: here

I have no experience of any of this lot, though, and would agree with above in that having wierd engines makes the boat harder to sell.

Pretty certain that the Mercruiser engine was spawned from the old BMW unit.
Not a problem at the moment but would still want a big discount in comparison to the VP engined equivalent.
Don't know about the outdrives.

It's actually a VM engine which is italian, and the mercruiser is the basic same unit. Not sure if the legs have any problems but the engines need to be well maintained especially the heat exchanger. Parts aren't a problem with a couple of companies supplying both new and used parts at very good prices. (compared to the likes of volvo)

i had a bmw 6 cylinder petrol engine in a fletcher sportsboat ten years ago dating from 1986. the engine was fantastic but the legs where a problem then !! so tread very carefully now. the best person in uk re bmw marine is ph marine at val wyatt marina in wargrave berkshire. they bought all the bmw marine stocks when they pulled out of the marine market.

Wonder if the boat you are looking at is the 31ft Corniche advertised on the internet.Legs are prob OK on smaller boats but over 30 ft would recommend shafts everytime.Unless you are a really keen DIY fanatic or a lottery winner old outdrives are grief just waiting to either waste hours of your valuable boating time or empty your bank account.Most old outdrives are not looked after properly because of the costs involved,unless you are lucky enuff to buy your boat from someone with more money than sense like me. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Does this mean you bought your boat from someone with more money than sense or is it you that has more money than sense?

I had a Corniche on Volvo 290 outdrives and never had any serious problems (other than aluminium prop damage that I could change at sea in 20 mins)
I think a Corniche is a little small for shafts and cruise speed 4knts slower and uses more fuel to get there slower.
Not sure I would be too keen on BMW.
My old Corniche is still for sale(not by me, I part x) and that has been very well looked after and proven reliability.
6 years 10,000 nm ish , no serious problems. Cruise 24-26 knts
1.6 mpg
But the vendor is asking top price 61k /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Expensive to fix in both time and money.

Suspect that the previous owners of the Corniche must have maintained the outdrives of your boat properly.
The flipside is having to change all the rubbers every 2 years,rams which corrode at around 400 pounds a pop and them little stainless hoses at around 80.00 pounds each,and not forgetting the electric hydraulic lift motors,if you only have to replace 1 ram and four hoses every so often it really adds up on top of the replacement bellows,hoses and prop shaft oil seals etc.
Obviously doomsday senario,but 4 x rams and 8 hoses is a tidy sum to find over ant period of time.Compare that to grabbing the cutlass bearing and giving it a good yank to detect for any wear once a year before a quick coat of antifoul.

Its not quite that bad for Volvo DP drives - new rams £400 a pair with the hoses, rams are £80 recon each from Coastalrides.

Finding a competent volvo engineer to fit these things - now thats a challenge....
