A friend was showing me his archos 5 internet tablet today - excellent screen for dvd and TV viewing - I was wondering if it would be a contract free alternative to the iphone for marine apps? I read a US review in the interim which said the GPS reception was patchy around San Francisco. Has anyone tried it for marine use?

Hi there,
I have an archos 5, it's good for data storage and use as a PVR (personal video recorder) but would not even try and use it for marine apps, if you even could?

WiFi is patchy (although I havent tried it for a while) and the battery life could be better, but the biggest use so far is data storage, MP3's & 4's, WMAs etc, photo's, and as previously said PVR entertainment (you need an add on for this).

You can however once you have the add on use it as a very capable hard drive recorder at home then coupled with the screen watch your favorite programs at leisure while on the move.
Iplayer etc will work through the opera internet browser but is rather hit and miss.

The opera web browser is slow to respond and you need to resize many of the web pages because they are the same as on a desktop (but only 5 inch screen on Archos 5 which means scrolling around a lot).

It is good well manufactured kit, not sure it would be suited to marine use though.

Thanks for the feedback. My friend was showing me his collection of recorded tv shows and movies - the play back quality was excellent. If I remember correctly I think he mentioned 250gigs storage on the hard disk. It has a number of USB ports and I thought: hmmm If I were to load up a chartplotter and connect a USB GPS...
From your comments and what I've gleaned so far, this seems to be wishful thinking on my part - it seems the processing power of the archos might be a limiting factor in marine apps
