ARC...........

I wouldn't cross with the ARC again - it's all a bit to chummy with the regulars, in fact last year the winner of spirit of the ARC was a real regular, chartering like most boats.

We sailed across and arrived "late" with only a couple of parties left, in fact a lot of the bigger boats had already gone.

Lack of interest in the smaller boats from the organisers for sure.

smaller boats - ha we were 42 foot!

I think they've given up on the ARC Rubicon, not enough entries so the big fella's have swamped the ARC.

Anyway - for what it' worth leave it a little later to cross and let the trades establish and the tropical storms dissipate!

There are quite a few who cross the Atlantic about three weeks later, or when the trades get going. Seemed like a good bunch the few that turned up while we were there.

Cheers

Once upon a time there was a rally for Atlantic Cruisers...

It went down hill quickly because I was an ARC “white leg” in 1986.

Having finished a contract I thought hmmm maybe I could fly down to the Canaries and get a bunk. So I phoned the ARC office in Gran Canaria and Jimmy Cornell himself picked up the phone and said sure you will find a berth, come on down.

Re: A Sad Change..

In fact if any smaller boats want the ARC effect why not just join up via an Internet site and 'meet' up somewhere in the Canaries and set off together?

Provided you have SSB you can all keep in touch. Herb does as good and probably better weather than whoever is doing it for the ARC and you can have an AM and PM radio schedule to keep in touch... Just need someone to be net controller.

For the safety aspect you will all be in proximity and if anybody does fail to check in on the schedule then alarm calls can be sent out...

The above is exactly how the Pacific, Indian Ocean and Red Sea is handled by independent cruisers.

Cost nothing - similar minded people looking out for each other and parties galore if that's what you want..........

If anybody is interested then do email me via my web site and I will set up a page for people heading out this year....... So you can all join up - meet up and go together.... Atlantic Crossing Net??? Any body got a better name????
