Why do so many people pay hard earned money for what is such an easy trip to do solo?
Why do so many people prefer to sail down to the Algarve outside of the Rally? Once you take into account the free berthing, free tours to inland places of interest, free evening meals from some sponsors and so on, I doubt the cost of the Rally is any greater than doing it solo. The Rally additionally provides the opportunity for great social events at each stop and is terrific fun - what's not to like? It's all about personal choice, if its not your scene then don't participate - simples! But don't knock it as a choice for other sailors, it's nothing like the ARC, it's a real cruising rally visiting places you'd otherwise quite probably overlook.

+1; we did Rally Portugal (that's what it was called back then) in 2004. Absolutely bl00dy brilliant way of getting down to Lagos.
