Quite so. Choosing a transat cruiser cos it goes upwind well is "points well" is. as daft as choosing a steel boat which are excellent if you hit an iceberg ... yet also the choice of KE on his now somewhat long-ago transat...

That's all very well until you find that you need to come home again. There is a significant chance of serious upwind sailing on the way back.

Any modern boat should be fine, but maybe one where you know the keel isn't going to fall off would be a bonus? So, a boat that's easy to survey with a known history perhaps?
The cost of equipping such a boat can be high, so weighing up what individual boats need in terms of new sails, rigging, gear upgrades etc might be more important than the actual model.
