I won't be using my boat (v.well appointed 53ft pilothouse ketch) during Oct, Nov and Dec and was wondering what the prospects might be to charter out the boat (bareboat or skippered) for someone else to do the ARC or similar. I have time in Jan to collect the boat from the Caribbean so the charterer could have their adventure and not worry about the return trip.

Do you thing this idea could 'have legs'? What else should I be considering other than ensuring:

a) the boat is ready (it will have done a W to E crossing in July),
b) the insurance is adjusted accordingly and
c) the skipper (if bareboat) has suitable opportunity to get to know the boat before embarking (such as me going on a week's cruise with him/her)

Also, where would be best to advertise the opportunity and what price should I ask.

Excuse my ignorance, but by 'coded' do you mean MCA coded? If so, don't know but sounds like soemthing I need to find out about.

anyone know of a site with a good summary of the MCA coding requirements. I've looked on their site but can't see anythign that succintly provides what I need.

Does anyone know the approximate cost of the survey/certification part of MCA coding? ie if I have prepared the boat and all the documentation, what would it cost to get it inspectd and an MCA certification issued?

I only know of teh RYA costs for certification - the RYA is an MCA Certification Authority.

You will need to get the boat stability checked and then a complete, out-of-the-water m survey and check of safety equipment.

For standard boats the stability assessment can cost as little as £36 but in your case the I suspect it will be somewhat more. The safety inspection costs £36 per meter length, which is one of the cheapest fees around, as far as I know. The RYA then charges £70 to issue the certificate. The Certificate needs to be renewed annually following a visual inspection. I'm not sure of the cost of this.

varies, but I know that a 23m can be just £1200 if you find the inspector themselves. The forms come from erm the orginastion in petersfield on bahalf of the MCA (look for certification MCA boat petersfield in google) or send a PM to "Duncanhamble" on this forum who can help. Essentially, there's a load of equipment checking/buying pus one or two possible modificiations you or may not need (gas etc).

There are others who will charge loads more and essentially subcontract and inspector and add their margin - no reall added value there.
