I am going to demonstrate my ignorance now.

Page 84, snippet by rigger who did 80 regi checks pre-ARC. Biggest problem were damaged or missing rings ostensibly securing stanchions and rigging clevis pins. "Get rid of them; they have no place on a boat"

What should I have if not the rings????

Also he berates loose shackles and says "mouse them up.....best thing is to use monel seizing wire." Any pictures/advice on how to do this?

Thanks

Split pins can replace the retaining rings.

To mouse up a shackle with monel wire (monel is a type of metal that does not rust) and most chandlers will have small reels of it.

You feed the wire through a hole in the end of the shackle pin and around the shackle a couple of times. Pull tight with pliers and then twist the ends together and bend up flush with the shackle. It will stop the shackle unscrewing.

To do do this you need a hole in the end (not the threaded end) of the shackle pin. There may be a special way of seizing a shackle pin without a hole but I am not aware of it.
