Has anyone got experience of using one of the bitumen/rubber sealants on iron keels. Thinking about it but only got 10 days until launching, so need to make up my mind soon.
Seem to have seen more people doing it than in earlier years.

Tar based products aint what they used to be due to health and safety restrictions likewise chlorinated rubber. Bitumen based products will "bleed" and "interfere" with modern A/F's Most cast iron is porus and unless profiled by blasting, adhesion can be a problem, large blisters could appear within a season, better to use a proper single pack U/W aluminium anticorrosive applied at the correct film thicknes ie at least five brushed coats, two /three coats a day providing the keel(s) are not tooooo cold then A/F
There is another product on the market that is used as a osmosis preventative and underwater metal preservative that looks like a tar based product
This product is called VC Tar !! which is in fact tar free tar!!

I had used canal boat blacking.

[/ QUOTE ]I've been using canal boat blacking (formerly called Water-Tank Black) in place of antifouling while in the USA and Canada where environmental laws make it difficult to apply your own antifouling. It seems to act as a mild fresh-water fouling and rust inhibitor, even though its non-poisonous.

The disadvantage is that it needs very regular scrubbing. But it is not difficult to remove, and it can be overcoated with a tie coat if and when I go back to antifouling.
