Larger though. The series 40 take special ( expensive ) bulbs which are IIRC normally 25 watts although 10 watt are available for use where appropriate

The series 25 are more compact and use festoon bulbs I think 10 watts is the max size for those. Although they are special bulbs you can make do with automotive ones if desperate or tight-fisted.

If you change to a series 40 you will need a new ( expensive ) mounting bracket I think as well

Buy the 40 which is well built. I have just purchased another after my last one was not caught by the crew as it fell to the deck from 35 feet.

Mine has the quickfit mount and I have purchased led bulbs from boatlamps to reduce leccy consumption.

I dont do much night sailing, 5 nites /year. One idea was to have the light removable and only set up if your doing a night passage. rest of time away from the elements. Someone says the mounting kit comes with it? Quick release? Ta Nik

The mounting bracket is listed an an "extra" There are a variety of different mounting brackets available. It might be possible to buy the series 40 bicolour c/w a bracket but I doubt if it will come at the same price as a bare lantern. You'll pay for it one way or another

I dont think the bicolour comes with a "quicfit" system option.

AquaSignal Series 25 fixtures are designed for boats under 39 ft (12m) as they are designed to be visible up to 1NM. Series 40 are suitable for boats up to 64 ft (20m) and meet the COLREGS visibility requirement of 2NM. Clearly the length of your boat will determine the minimum visibility criterion.

The downside of the series 40 bicolour is that it needs a 25w incandescent lamp to produce enough light in the green spectrum to provide the 2NM visibility. LED lamps are readily available for bi colour fixtures, for best output, choose a bi-coloured (red/green) LED replacement. Alternatively, you can choose a marine LED Lamp in warm white, this has an output that works very well behind bi-coloured lenses for boats up to 12m, but a bi-coloured bulb works even better, however the cost differential between the two is significant.
