Have heard a rumour that sombody is going to invent a new drive system. It will involve using twice as many cogs / gears shafts as any other system. It will rely on bits of rubber to keep out the elements and also more rubber bits to keep oils and lubricants in.It will also need a complicated arrangement of hydraulics and electrics in order for it function. The entire thing will be constructed from a material that corrodes faster than chocolate.
It must be checked every year, bits changed every two years with virtually a major rebuild recommended every five.
You could not make it up :):):).
It has one big advantage...it enables the people who fix them to buy bigger and bigger boats....all with shafts of course.

I'm been lucky enough to get a new job in the marine sector recently and one of the biggest surprises for me (having seen all the comments here) is the number of cutlass bearings and shaft seals requiring replacement! For me, outboard is fine for the moment and even when I've completed my project and move to sterndrive, it will be DIY maintenance every year! It's like most things, you save a fortune by learning how things work and doing what you can yourself. :)

Poor old thing.

My out drives on my my 43 ft sports cruiser deliver 50kts and use a third less fuel ( oh shit! Took the bait).

Would you care to join us? and maybe spice our bait up with outdrive oil. LOL
