I'm just intrigued really... why are Bristol Port Company so keen that we use the inshore route to approach Portishead and/or the Avon?

There's so much more room to sail on the Offshore route if there's water over the Welsh Grounds, and it's a very short hop across the King Road between Denny Shoal and Firefly.

Because when they bring their large boats in the tugs and everything need space to manoeuvre and slow down.

If the tide is running it can take a lot of engine power to make that crossing and avoid giving up too much leeway.
Also that narrow gap is the chosen route for the big boys.
Have to respect the guys who bring the big car transporters in.

But we haven't done that end of the BC for some years.

Assuming you are under 20m LOA? Because its a charted narrow channel and RULE 9 of the Colregs applies. If you use the inshore route you cannot break any of Rule 9 when on route to Portishead.

The pdf I posted above is from a leaflet, published by the Bristol port company (too big to post here). It's front cover shows two boats, one of which is me, sailing NW from the Avon. I've always thought it is ironic!
If anyone wants a copy just PM me with an email address.
