You know, if you look at the new prices of boats - Sealines are more expensive than Princess and many others! Comparing a Princess 50 to a Sealine 51T with the same extras on both the Princess is much cheaper.

As another excercise I costed up a Sealine T47 new - allowing for the expected new discount you can always haggle - then a search on the used boat market brought up the same boat selling for a higher price secondhand than new!!! This was the norm for that model in the secondhand model- 2001 models selling at a higher price than the 2003 models after allowing for options etc!.

Do some folks just leave their boats on sale in the hope a fool will one day come along? How many boat listings are people really trying to sell?

With the stock market so flat at present I feel its a buyers market more than normal, so no matter what boat I end up with, I am certainly going to do some hard bargaining.

It can also be argued that because interest rates and the S.M. are so low people are splurging out on boats /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Byron's right. Having watched the value of all of our stock market based investments plummet over the last 2 years, I feel somewhat disinclined to throw good money after bad so buying a boat and knowing you'll get most if not all of your money back when you sell it does'nt seem such a bad investment in comparison. Throw in historically low interest rates and rapidly rising property values making us all feel better about our dud shares and you've got an active boat sales market
However, there's no way that the value of a used boat should be more than new. My feeling is that, even though the market is active, only the best and most attractively priced boats sell. I do think there are some people out there who continuously keep their boat on the market at a high price almost from the day they buy it just to see whether some idiot does come along. Of course, the other reason for this is long delivery periods on new boats. If Sealine are quoting several months for a new T47, then somebody with more money than sense might be tempted by a used one even at a new price

We are all in agreement here. I think added to the comments by Mike and Byron, I think there is since Sept 11 there is a 'oh sod it' attitude which says 'lets just go out cash in and buy the boat weve always wanted'
I would like to think my Sealine is worth more now than last year but realistically I think not.

Exactly the reasons that made me finally buy a boat last autumn - wish I had done it years ago.

At least if it sinks its insured (unlike my portfolio of "safe" investments).

As I told my financial advisor while trying to prise my purchase money from him - "It may not be the most prudent investment but I'll be dead one day" - Roll on springtime.

Happy new year to all
