Applying preventative epoxy

Hi

I'm in the process of stripping years of anti foul from my boat to start again from the gell coat and have been advised that having gone to the trouble I should apply an epoxy treatment as a precaution (there are no blisters or signs of osmosis).

I'm a little confused about how I go about this and any advice would be appreciated.

I have the West Systems manual which still leaves me confused on 2 issues...

1) it alludes to removing the gel coat? surely I don't need to do this?

2) it states that the ambient temperature should be at least 18 degrees C - this isn't going to happen for a couple of months yet and she needs to go back in the water soon - any ideas.

Many thanks

I'm about to epoxy my boat using gelshield 200 which can be applied at 5C or more (hopefully a bit warmer when I do it!). Get hold of an International paints leaflet, soom good info in there.

Cheers LJS

Could I ask how you're prepared you hull? - and have you taken a moisture reading?

Had it sand blasted, seemed the best and easiest option. Tried sanding and scraping in the past - never again!! I have my own moisture meter so don't have a problem with taking readings!

I had a quote for £822 to have my 27 footer sand blasted so decided to do it myself!

Do you know where I can get a moisture metre and how much?

Well I paid £300 for my 32 footer and he did an excellent job.

My moisture meter is a Tramex skipper, advert in PBO, sold I think by Nigel Clegg. Bought it about 5 years ago for £230ish. Ask around, someone local may be willing to lend you one.
