My latest gadget is an Apple Airport Expressand I thought I’d share my experience.
Basically it streams music over wifi from Iphones and Ipads using ‘airplay’.
I converted it to 12v using a £2.50 voltage regulator off e-bay so that it can be hard wired into the boat’s electrics. I’ve coupled it with my R36 wifi hotspot and Alfa wifi range booster.
The end result is that if I (or any Apple toting guests) want music on board, just play it on the phone or tablet and tap the airplay icon. All the functionality remains the same, including volume control but it plays through the boat’s speakers instead of the phone. I can do the same with my internet radio app so I can listen to radio stations that aren’t all in Italian.
I'm sure it does much more but I bought it just for the wireless music and it works brilliantly!

After using airport-express throughout my home, considered using it on the boat, we have 2 separate sound systems on board, but in the end decided to use bluetooth connections instead. Main reason was bluetooth doesn't need a router & each can be used separately. Easy to setup, one sound system already had bluetooth installed & the other only required a low cost bluetooth unit connected to aux input. You do have the advantage of internet streaming, so even though the apple kit is a little more expensive, it has more functionality.
