I was out fishing on a charter boat Monday. When a Mayday relay was broadcast, the Skipper and myself, sat in the cabin listening to the situation, and followed the rescue. We were both appalled at the amount of calls on ch16 that were made during this time. The situation was difficult enough for the relay boat, without having his broadcasts interupted for radio checks, by other boats. The most notable one, was from a boat on the Mixen shoal in Swansea bay, with a request to offer assistence, the incident however was taking place in Cardiff bay!!! You could hear the sheer frustration in the coastgaurds voice, when the boat concerned stated that now he had the CG's attention, he would like to report that he had safely made passage from Ilfracoombe!!!! I looked at the skipper and at the same time we both said F*****G Yottie!!!!!
we were correct!! Fortunately every one concerned were rescued with no injuries etc. How different that could have been with the amount of radio traffic during an emergency!!!

Many years ago CB radio was really good with one channel as an emergency and another as a calling channel - worked really well - kids came on and ruined it. Still thats progress.

One wonders whether now the "fad" is over if CB has become a useful road tool again. Anyone listened lately?

To be more accurate they neutered it - then legalized it!

Funny you should say that - we live close to the M5 and I have heard stories that the Truckers are using it to kep in touch.
Isnt that how it all started in the first place ?? Big Bear - Convoy - Rubber Ducky.

actually as a "Fun" means of comminucation - they work best in open areas with no obstructions - ooo just like the sea ..... that would leave ch 16 clear /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.

Anyone got one on their boat ??

The old CB/81 or whatever they were are a bit obsolete now. Most who use it are using CEPT sets. Same as the rest of euroland. Is it still used. I used to know a couple of charter boats had it to talk btween themselves.
