Spinlock rope clutches. Mine are sort of a bit sad. They let more out before they grab the line. I cant find any servicing instructions for these clutches. Anyone any idea? I usually keep them pretty clean with a hose down from time to time. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Is it possibly a question that the line is worn in that area because they are constantly gripped on the same spot every time you pull them in? I suggest that your turn your lines around and if they still don't grip, then blame spinlock.

Hmm, no I don't think so. E.g. genoa halyard, which only gets used once or twice a season (roller reefing). No wear apparent. It seems as if the minimalistic insides have some friction built up. I wondered if anyone else had same problem and did something like spray the clutch with, say, ptfe spray?

Two things. It is difficult to detect compression damage in a line and over time a line will suffer from compression damage, especially halyards.

Secondly, I've just read your profile and your say "hope to die at the tiller rather than in bed". Wouldn't that depend on who was in bed with you playing with your tiller? Just thought I'd ask?

Really !?!?

My Spinlock clutches are older than yours and get more use: ie all the year round West Coast + Alba and all round Ireland ... I've never ever had any problems with them re initial slippage. They are easy to take apart, clean and reassemble.

Re: Really !?!?

Kinnever - Apart from the genoa, my reefing lines etc get a lot of use, but you say they are easy to take apart etc. Well, I have never taken one of mine apart, and I think that may be the trouble. How do you take them apart? Looked on Spinlock web site and no info there.

Last done in the middle of nowhere

Prise the sides off (with difficulty) to get to the innards. From there on its nuts and bolts ... Beware the cam spring that will leap overboard at the first opportunity. Do not clean or lubricate with WD40 - Use keytone and an old toothbrush to remove any crud and then wash in soft warm water. Do not lubricate. Reassemble only if the cam is not worn out. (It's obvious when it's worn) New cams are available from Spinlock.
