With the north Devon coast having few ports of call, a new one might be welcome.

Bude canal has recently had something like £5 million spent on moorings, complete with drinking water and 240v power, new lock gates, lighting etc...
Rates seemed amazingly cheap.

Access is dependant on sea conditions, they might not be able to open the lock if the seas are breaking over it, but it otherwise looks straighhtforward.

Contact Kevin Benson on 07789033573 to arrange opening.

wonderful fishion chips just round the corner from the first pic.

Well worth the visit if you are brave enough to time it right.

Thanks for the info, have often thought "must give it a go" just waiting for the weather to be nice when I have a week off!
Is there a web site with some more info?

The previous Mrs Giblets lives in Bude. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif (see my sig.)

That being said, I can highly recommend the Mirchi India restaurant in Lansdown Road. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

In a book I have of Bristol Channel and Westcountry sailing coasters it is notable how many had their registry closed "wrecked entering Bude", their appear to be a lot of nasty offlying half tide rocks, paticularly hazardous of course before engines were fitted.

Bude and Clovelly are both on my wish list for visits. I have heard that Bude is very expensive to get them to open the lock gates (~£80?) Less of a problem if there are 3 or 4 boats to share the cost. This may have been chat at the bar with one of the members who "knows everything" but never leaves the pontoon!

I think he probably heard it from somebody who got told by a friend whose wife's hairdresser had thought she'd heard someone on a bus mention it..... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I remember reading in the Bude museum some accounts of sailing boats trying to make an approach into the sheltered part of the harbour in strong onshore winds... apparently if you didn't gybe round at exactly the right spot it was straight up the beach.

Looked pretty scary !

Good museum..
