For a 45ft Yacht with an experienced Skipper but irregular and only slightly experienced crew. He wants a cruising chute and was considering one with a Sock but he saw this online and thought it looks easier with inexperienced crew. Sails off and around Gibraltar for day sailing and occasional racing.

Cheers

I am considering the Crusader Magic Furl. You will need to have it sleeved though, as there is little UV protection.
This will definitely help my planned move to self tacking jib, as I can roll out the Gennaker when off the wind in light airs.

Thanks for that,

It looks an interesting alternative, but at £1650 not cheap! Do you know anyone who has used one i.e. is it worth it? Certainly seems a good bit of kit and removable for storage. Given the high winds here a furling Cruising chute seems so much easier. Is this the system that Amels use as the last two yachts that arrived here had a secondary headsail that was removed the next day.

Cheers for that and any more info will be greatly appreciated! I am learning a lot in a short period. The Skipper is lacking in modern changes to sailing (although has a Bene 50)

Cheers

Here is what I know, comparing a system for 35ft jeanneau.

Crusader:
Torque rope system, simple, Bartels furling drum. Needs Dyneeema halyards (£300) to reduce spin on the halyard. £1123 inc VAT and alterations required to your sail. Been around for a couple of years.

Kemp:
Torque rope system with higher spec (but maybe uneccessary) engineered add ons. Continuous line drum, not made by them. They say no halyards change required. £900 to £1100 as they are going to quote me later. New system, tried out on Rob Kemps' 32ft jeanneau, but not quite on the market just yet.

These furlers are very popular with single-handed or short-handed racers and the principle has been around some time. A UV strip is not necessary since the whole sail and furler can be lowered to the deck and stowed in the same way that a spinnaker snuffer (or sausage) is treated. Typically they are combined with a bowsprit to maximise the between the forestay and the asymmetric.

Update bummer. Kemp £1456, LESS 'DISCOUNT'. Its like selling bloody double glazing.
