This is called a cooker and it is used for making food hot - I would recommend it for hot foods - however it should not be used for ice cream or the likes.
Seriously - no never seen one but have been looking for something similar i.e cobbs cooker - so let me know
I've got one. I used it extensively over the last few weeks going to Falmouth, and back.
Yes they work, I managed to do chicken breast wrapped in Parma ham, exactly as I would do it in a conventional oven. The hob was turned down nearly as far as it would go, and the timing was similar to an oven on 180 deg C.
You cant do anything much bigger than a chicken breast because of the shape. You can heat up Cornish Pasties, but not a Fray Bantos Pie /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
If you haven't got an oven then it does work as one. If I had the space on the boat I would prefer an oven, but I haven't and in that case it is a viable alternative.

Would it be ok on a ceramic electric hob ? Only want to cook oven chips & jacket spuds etc.

I think it will work OK on ring electric. I can't see why it wouldn't work on a ceramic, as it just uses the heat from the hob to circulate up its central 'chimney' and round the food being cooked.
I did try it with oven chips, once, and realised that I would need a lot of experimentation to get it right, as they probably need 200 deg C plus, 'cos you want them crispy on the outside.
I didn't know whether it would even do what I wanted it to, so I just paid up and tried it, and yes it does exactly what I want it to.
