thought i'd ask , been here a few years and now boats are on the move, all is calm and if you want any info i'll be happy to help, we arrived here 5 years ago, our plan was to move on but plans change, we are based in Port Yasmine Hammamett, a relatively new marina, well laid out and not too expensive, we arrived here in 2007 almost by accident, it was in our plans but info was hard too find, met a delivery skipper in nazzare portugal he gave us some good info as his boat was here and off we went.

all is calm

no ,all is calm , sometimes on a Friday afternoon in Tunis it can get a bit heated but apart from that no problem , here in Port Yasmine and the other marinas life goes on as usual, the new democracy is a bit of a challenge for the people to get used to especially freedom of speech but as they say "no news is good news"

Whats it like as a cruising destination

Is it day sailing out and back to your marina or are there a reasonable number of places to anchor or moor overnight ?

Do they have a Blue Card scheme? :D

Hi, what's 'not too expensive'? what are the rates for 13.6m? Diesel prices etc, I could be tempted.:)

I left Yasmine after 3 pleasant years there a year ago. The cost for 12.70 metres was around £1750 per annum, diesel prices were half European prices.

The marina is good and safe and secure. Theft is rare. (I lost more in the local launderette than anywhere else). Labour is cheap. The people are genuinely friendly and there are good engineers if you know where to look - Oriziba pointed us in the right direction and is a great contact to have.

Negatives are that it is still a poor country and that does restrict choices at times.

It is a different culture to our own and you need to be able to adapt and go with the flow. The marinas are enclaves where they try to serve the western market. Very popular with the French and Italians with a good sprinkling of Brits.

Would I go back - yes without hesitation...........:)

Hi thinking of wintering in Tunisia. What are the costs like when you say not too expensive. How big is the livaboard community there and cost of living. Sorry have not read all the replies so not sure if anyone has asked the above questions - we have very limited access to internet right now. Is it safe there?
Thanks and regards

Why you would see replies but not previous posts mystifies me?

Here is the link to Port Yasmine complete with price lists.

Cost of living is as cheap as it gets except for beer which you will have to pay 50p per bottle for.

Completely safe!

thank-you for the interest here are a few prices the currency is tunisian dinar TND the rate is approx 2.40 tnd to the pound, a good rate at the moment, fuel 1.2 tnd a litre, gas 5 tnd for a camping gaz bottle refill , beer 1 tnd a bottle, supermarket 2.5-3 tnd in a bar, wine 5 plus bottle in the supermarket,10 plus in a restaurant, vegetables 1.3 tnd per kilo, fruit 1.6 tnd per kilo , turkey breast 8 tnd per kilo, baguette 0.2 dinar, , pasta 0.5 tnd per half kilo, there is an abundance of small supermarkets, butchers, fresh fruit and veg shops locally, the prices and quality is often better than the big supermarkets eg carrefour and geante though these offer more choice, there are a couple of mini supermarkets closeby more uk style, a lot of traveling is by bus ,minibus or taxi, the prices are not high, eg Hammamet to Tunis 4tnd by shared minibus Port Yasmine to Hammamet 6tnd or by bus 0.5 tnd, for up to date prices re berths i suggest silverfox's link to the port .other info is on our website mtmarineservices.com, there is a mix of nationalities, mainly french, but we held a bbq Xmas day with french, dutch , Australian, Slovenian, Italian,Belgium and Canadian ,a real mixed bag.
this year i would guess at about 60 boats with liveaboards through the winter but a bit spread out,
wifi is available in the marina , either by card or orange dongle. this has to be paid for ,though there is free wifi in some local restaurants.
if you enjoy spirits its best to bring with you as it is quite expensive here .
OK that's enough info for now

What a pity. We as a Catamaran will not be able to go as there is a 50% loading charge and that puts it out of our budget. We are only paying €1400-00 for an annual contract here and that includes FREE wi-fi,Gym etc etc.

Would have loved to visit. We did go to Hammermet on a holiday (hotel) before the trouble and realy enjoyed it, ah well.

fair winds
