Peters and May have a complete yacht shipping package and will advise you (for free) on all the pros and cons. When I looked into it for a 40ft C&C they worked out cheaper than delivery skipper and crew. They will also advise re VAT and import duty. You should be aware that you pay VAT on the landed value, i.e. purchase price +delivery costs (including insurance)+import duty (as the boat is under 12meters/ 12metres and over, you are exempt import duty). You should also be aware that boats in USA are usually advertised at prices excluding the local State sales tax, for which you may be liable. The rules and amounts vary from state to state. In Florida you have to remove the boat within 90 days of completion of sale or you become liable regardless of the final destination. If you want to talk in more detail, PM me and I will send you my phone number.
It can be a worthwhile exercise, but not a quick fix.

Agreed, you can avoid the local sales tax provided you move it out of state within a fixed time (timescale seems to vary from state to state, so check).

Also second the Peters and May recommendation. They are very helpful and respond promptly to email enquiries
