I can't believe I'm going sailing tomorrow and then am off skiing the next weekend.

Skiing / sailing used to be months apart, sailing in the summer, skiing in the winter. Clearly I'm doing something wrong. Is this what they call "adiction" ?

Anyone else out - Cowes for lunch ?

You must be crazy - 3 degree's, wind from the NE. Unless you have a Powerboat, with two heat-generating Penta's, an inside bridge, and loads of Eberspracher outlets, you should be inside, and the boat up on its legs on land!

Not much traffic in the Solent this time of year - put auto pilot on, linked to gps and set a waypoint for Cowes - then sit down below with heater on playing backgammon, drinkin' beer and eating crisps.

I'm sure the ferries will get out of the way...

If we take down our ensign we'll look like we're racing therefore the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea simply won't apply to us...

Fiendish!

If you are going out, then trust automation, I say.
Ferries have plenty of time to spot you, its the hovercraft that could sneak up while staying down below in the warmth. Still, whats the odds of them hitting? Pretty low I would say. So, if you are mad enough to go out, stay below, and switch on those electronics. Thats what we spend all the money for, after all

Go for it Roger. Last weekend - Chichester to Ryde. NE 3-4. Not a cloud in the sky. 6C but wrapped up. Round the Nab and back.
Single-handed, no heaters, no tillerpilot. Had a great time. Saw 3 sails in the E. Solent. What a bunch of softies some of you are.

I'd love to join you. I'm racing on the Mersey, but I'll talk to the Race Officer to see if we can include Cowes in the course. As for this hi-tech heater that can play backgammon, I'm very impressed! Round here we still kevlar sails are clever.

Fact is that Roger and I had a great day out today. Sorry for the wind-up.
Wind forecast was somewhat crap, so put the nose out of Portsmeouth harbour. Fantastic 4-5 NE, and tide under us meant Cowes in 1 1/2 hrs. On arriving in Cowes the coastguard were forecasting Gale 8 imminent, so we hot-footed back to Gosport against tide and f5 or 6. A couple of Guinesses in Haslar, and we piloted in the dark back to Port Solent. First time there in the dark - don't believe Sailing Today's harbour guides, or else they change the lights as they seem fit.

Anyway a great day out.

PS don't tell everyone that winter sailing in the Solent is great.
