No, not the pound coin.

The button, or catch, or latch, was found on the coachroof, near the base of the mast.

Rings no bells with me (so not a bellpush, then) and may have been dropped there by a passing thieving magpie, but just in case, does anyone recognise it as a part of anything maritime?

This is going to drive me mad because I have a very distant recollection of pressing that red object down with my thumb and pushing it sideways until it clicks in place.

I've remembered but I don't think it will help much. The one I've seen is an end stopper for the bar on a paper trimmer.

Just had a thought to narrow things down a bit. If Ken could determine the radius of the curve on his mysterious object, it would give him an idea as to the size (diameter) of the object to which it was fitted.

Of course it might have come off someone else's boat transported in the wind or by a bird.
