Anyone own a Prestige 42S or have any views (particularly on the IPS drives)

Hi All

We seem to be getting somewhere with a med mooring in my previous thread, so we have a good range of options to go and see, now we need a boat to put on it.

There have been some great boat suggestions in one of the other threads, so just shortlisting for a 40ft ish sports boat in the med, and after following a couple of the other threads, the Jeanneau Prestige 42s seems to tick a lot of boxes. Nice looking, well planned, and there are some reasonable second hand ones available.

I am not sure about the work involved in maintaining the IPS drives, but the maneuvering looks great, as does the cabin layout, the garage area and just the general space.

So any points to be aware of, any advice? I saw a thread from jimmy_the_builder with some of the challenges of getting to some parts of the engines, but everything else I can find makes it look a good option?

Thanks

Martyn

It's a good boat in my opinion, usual issues with the Jenneau stable but if the hull checks out and the boat is dry and well maintained it's great value now.
Check the elec cockpit window and the roof. The garage is fine for a small rib, esp if you fit a torqueedo. (Don't think there's a winch in there).
Access is fine I think, the garage floor uplifts for servicing.

I think that the IPS 500s were not first gen but you really need service history for oil changes and so on, (it'll be 5 years plus so if some forumites are to be believed the PODs will just about be ready to biodegrade).

Keep an eye out for the 440s, a minor facelift and some great value examples around.

Good sea boat with great owners cabin and great looks.

Naah, don't trust those folks with the typical internet naysayer attitude, I've yet to see an IPS biodegrading.
If anything, the opposite: the nasty stuff they usually release in the sea before exploding is not biodegradable at all! :D:D:D

Thanks for that - hoping to organise a viewing next week, but didnt know there was a difference with the 440s. Looking at a Targa 44 open as well, and a Cranchi, so be interesting to see what first impressions are like when we step on them. If I like the prestige may have some more questions on the IPS drives!

Biodegradable drives - whatever next :-)

Thanks

Martyn

You'll find both of the other boats have better quality composites and furnishings. A lot of the components will be the same but the biggest difference will be the hull, (other than the drives). The 42/440 has a flair, not quite Carolina but its is sea kindly. The boat with the IPS 500s will be quick enough but will turn slow and not feel as sporty as the other two, from what I know of them.
The Prestige will also be lighter which is not particularly good or bad as long as the hull checks out.

It'll come down to whether you want a more recent boat with good volume, joystick and typically good Prestige design, (The med salon and cockpit are best in class IMveryHO but if you want a sportier return and ironically a more Prestige badge, the other two brands my win you over.

The midships cabin will win you over I recon ;)

Oh and PODs don't really fall apart that easily, that would be wooden boats :)
