What happenend to cause the 38 foot motor boat to go up in flames in studland bay.

The boat was eventually towed out to sea by the lifeboat, to RIP.

not sure what happened but the navigation lights came on by themselves and the boat started spinning by itsself (enigne started???) we were anchored about 50 foot from it and it drifted towards us had to up anchor and move, started off as v small amount of somke then large flames lapped around it. the funny oart was the 2 fire engines on the shore??? teletext has the story compleatly wrong, the couple left the boat when it was smoking and were picked up buy another nearby boat then the lifeboat rib came and took them ashore. the lifeboat i assume with fire fighting equipment took an hour to arrive from poole..... also when it first started a fishing boat went along side with a large pump to stop it taking hold but were told not to, we heard that onthe vhf. When we left it was stating to die down which they then towed out to sea?

Suspected starter motor fault on port engine. By the time the engine hatch was opened, fire was already raging.

And what about the one at Hayling in the Chichester Channel the same day? Saw it from East Head, but too far off to see clearly what was going on. Reports said it was a speedboat with 6 people on board who escaped safely.

We saw the black smoke cloud too from our anchorage at Pilsey. Ran to stick Ch 16 on and just heard the tail end of the CG acknowledging the Mayday...

Scary.

He is a resident in our boatyard, luckily know one was injured. Even more sad is the fact that the owner lived on board, so all his possesions and paperwork have gone with the boat.

We look forward to seeing him back on the water soon.
