Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

http://www.boatshop24.co.uk/QUJTMjYxfmFiczAx%3D-Steel_Sports_Cruiser_PX_CONSIDERED_.html

My friend actually wants to buy this thing. Personally I think he needs to go to Specsavers.

Anyhow bein ghte friend that I am I said i'd try to dig out some info. I'm interested in the BMW engine... I think I read before parts are hard to get? Is this true?

Also, is it possible that a 150HP could get a 29ft steel boat onto the plane?

This boat was on eBay before with a starting price of 10k and it got no bids (surprise surprise!) so I think the thing would be worth about 9k if in good structural condition?

It looks pretty home made to me, nuts altogether

Looking for informative replies only folks, I don't need anyone telling me it looks like a tub/wreck etc... I already know that! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

The only way I could see 150hp getting it up on the plane would be to pitch the prop such that the "hump" speed related to (almost) full revs, then it perhaps could - but it then wouldn't accelerate much more until you hit full revs - can't see it otherwise really.... could be wrong of course

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

BMW engines were not the most reliable and I suspect parts are now in very short supply, put simply I'd avoid like the plague.

And if 150hp gets that tub planing it would be a near miracle.

I thought I heard that those BMW engines werent the greatest alright. Surely a broker can't claim it get's onto the plane, if it doesn't? I mean, what if you go down for a 'sea trial' and the thing doesn't plane, after the broker claiming it does?

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

Can't see how that would get 'properly' on the plane with just 150hp, might stand more of a chance with duoprops. I bet it could make quite a wash though.

By banning all remarks about the look of the boat you have spoilt all the fun.

Nice interior though! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

The ad says it has a Volvo outdrive but don't know if it's a duo prop. I'm going to e-mail the broker and see if he can give me any more info

Ooh nice interior alright. In fairness my friend said that if he does buy it he'd be stripping the interior. Personally I think he should sell it to the local metal yard

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

Serious comment about safety though (not looks)..

....those side decks looks like belonging on a 22 ft cuddy and would be dangerous to move alongside ... particularly for an inexperienced crew member with ropes ...

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

I'm sure this has been on here before, but it's still a dog! Some market trader form Essex probably wanted a river cruiser that looked like a sports boat! I can't see much in the way of redeeming features to be honest. Not a bad little river boat I suppose, but would still need a fair bit of work.

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

Highly unlikely it has a Duo Prop. I would be leary of that engine for sure

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

Does anyone have any hard facts about this BMW diesel engine?

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

Boat diesel forum has some bits on ref BMW engines, not sure how much you will be able to see on the forum as its a payable subscription (not a lot)

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

I think if you sorted out the wheelhouse with something more becoming it wouldnt be a bad looking boat. Seem to recall that BMW marine engines had something to do with Mercruiser or someone at some stage or am I making it up?
The boat used to be bright green and I promise it looked at lot worse then.

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

I tried to buy a boat off this broker last year. He is based about 1 mile from the river, so if the boat is at his site a sea (river) trial is very expensive-4 lifts and a truck each way.

He also stated that if I did want to do a trial, he would not allow me to exceed 4kts , so I guess his claim of the boat planeing wont be tested untill after you have bought it.

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

I'll pass the info on to my friend. I know that the boat is in the water. He'd have to pay for a lift to check the out-drive.

Ah hopefully by next week the lad will have found something else to waste his money on

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

There are only 2 lifts needed, one in and one out the trailer is hydraulic so it doesnt need at lift at the yard end. Lifting costs are the same there as any other marina. Do some work there and never heard any complaints about lifting. The steel sport cruiser is in the water, she was out a few months ago for painting etc. Over 20 years old so insurance co may need ultrasonic readings. Have heard today that one insurance company wants a survey for third party cover!!! They have had to many salvage bills latley.

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

It ain't 29 foot, its 30! And woefully underpowered.

Personally, I like it, no seriously, I do. I think it looks nice and with a good home and re-powered could be useful.

Just watch the old adage re steel boats though..."rust in peace"

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

My other boat, Shamby, has a 160bhp Volvo D3, and it's in fine fettle, but struggles getting her over the hump on a 24 foot hull....

That Tub' as somebody perfectly decribed it, looks like a home made, or modified vessel of some sort, perhaps made for 'Waterworld, but was too ugly /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Anyone know this \'sports cruiser\'?

There is no way a single 150hp will ever get a steel boat on the plane so displacement speeds are probably the only realistic otpion, that or pushing a lot of water and burning a lot of fuel for a few extra knots.

A guy I know has just had a BMW engine re-built. Supposed to be good engines but parts are rare as hens teeth and extremly expensive. Apparantly only one dealer in the UK, which isn't a good thing IMHO.
