Looking for a surveyor probably one willing to do some pre survey checks too? As we all know I'm completely new to this part and I have very little clue about boat mechanics.

(Long time no post!)

Not going to be doing any recreational activitie... until the lockdown ends, but that's not gonna stop me planning and prepping.

I'd skip the formal pre-purchase survey, instead find a surveyor or someone knowledgeable to take along for a detailed viewing where you open everything in the boat and check all the serial numbers which will be cheaper than a formal survey. Before making any offers or paying for a haul out if necessary.

Why is checking serial numbers important?

It's finding that someone knowledgeable that's the problem who is allowed out. People can still go out to work if they can't do it from home (so it'd be nice to give someone a break from isolation). Sadly I am clueless and I don't know anyone who would be willing to travel to North Wales.

That said I understand that checking the serial numbers is an anti-theft thing but does it matter for seaworthiness?

Thanks both!

Well, it turns out that it can be surprising which bits of the engine don't match what you - and apparently they - thought was there.

Should clarify, if you found out for instance that the gearbox or engine didn't match then you know they've been changed, and if they've not mentioned that then they're hiding something because such things are not trivia.

There are a number of North Wales based posters on here, hopefully one will be along soon to add up to date info.

I sailed there for 20 years but moved north a few years ago. This guy had a good reputation but I have no personal experience.

Welcome

I’m sure that Google will find others, equally qualified and experienced.

Never heard of checking serial numbers, or there even being serial numbers to check but Mark Mcgarry is supposed to be very good.

You could ask for a 'Surveyors opinion', which is a much cheaper option. The surveyor will cast an eye over the boat and report on the overall condition, and highlight anything he thinks needs further investigation. I had this done on a boat I was interested in. It just didnt look quite right, but I couldnt say why. The surveyor spotted what I had 'seen' but missed: the keel was out of true! Would have made for some very strange handling!

I have used him and was very satisfied with his survey and the price, well relative to others.

I've used Mark and would again. Many years ago he worked at Dickies so has good practical repair experience which many surveyors don't have.
Not used him in over 10 years but was very satisfied at the time, very approachable and knowledgable guy.
I followed him round for most of the survey (with his agreement) and learned a few things in the process.
would use him again if buying in that neck of the woods....
