Anyone in Conway Bay Saturday?

I started out sat morning to puffin island from conwy, and turned back about half way.Other boats going out as I came in did the same. The boat next to me in the marina came back from menai just in time to get over the sill gate 1.30pm.He said he has a lot more faith in what his boat can handle, but to say he was wet would be an understatement. Was also quite scary getting back on the pontoon.

Not just me then! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We tried the same thing, and got just past the fairway buoy, out of the wind shadow of Penmaen head before I decided it was silly, and turned back (about 13:30). We struggled to make headway against wind & chop initially, so I'm glad we turned back when we did. I would not have fancied the channel after the tide turned.

Do you have any idea of the wind speed at the time ? (not sure if you are mobo or raggie) - Just curious to put a number to the conditions.

Any idea what happened to the yacht stranded on the sand-bank?

We got back to the mooring OK, but the rubber-duck ride was extremely wet!

Then all of a sudden. the wind dropped, the sun came out and it was a lovely afternoon /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Why? what was the problem

My perception is that the wind was much stronger than the forecast F5, but I would welcome other opinions, and/or measurements, just to help to "calibrate" my wet finger (if you see what I mean! - We don't have wind instruments on Pippin).

As the wind was off the land (SE-ish) it's possible it was being funneled between the hills. It certainly wasn't enjoyable!

I went from Holyhead to Caemes Saturday morning and reckoned it ESE 4/5.

It can't have been that bad as between 2 and 4pm, about 14 boats turned up on the other tide, presumably from Conway or the Straits. The place was rammed...never seen it so busy.

Certainly felt more than 4/5, but wind history from RAF Valley bears out ~ F4. Perhaps it was due to the wind swirling & gusting off the hills, or perhaps I'm a bigger wuss than I knew I was. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re the history page, it has the weather at 1600 on Sunday as a black cloud with two raindrops, presumably meaning heavy rain...well I left Holyhead at 1600 on Sunday and it was clear blue skies and barely a cloud in sight!

The wind in Conwy bay at around 11am went from 10-12 knots to nearly 30 knots in the space of a few minutes. It wasn't the absolute wind strength as much as how quickly it came up and the variability that caused problems. From gentle sailing in bright sunshine we suddenly we had the lee rail plus a bit more underwater and a desperate urge to dump the mainsheet. SWMBO had the wheel in one hand and a cup of hot coffee in the other. Loosing the main sheet involved coffee all over the cockpit and a nasty rope burn (ouch!).

A reef was quickly put in and then 10 min later we were back sailing in 12 knots before it came up again. Given the flood tide and the boisterous wind it wasn’t surprising to hear reports of big waves around Puffin.

From what I could gather the wind was a little easier and less variable away from Conwy Bay so maybe the SE wind was somehow accelerated by the mountains. Exciting stuff for a short while.

To be fair to the met office the forecast was 4-5 occ. 6 off Anglesey. Theyre.net and xcwind got it completely wrong (both suggested F2-3) which just shows you who to believe really!

That makes me feel better! Perhaps I didn't imagine it after all. It was very gusty - we hit one patch where there was a dead calm (i.e nothing, nada, zip), and had to turn the motor on to get out of it, then in about 50 yards, it was wham! washing the windows time. Logged 7 knots SOG (tide assisted!).

Shame really, as a good wind forecast, favourable tides, sunshine & free time all came together simultaneously.

As far as Conwy?

Do katabatic type winds travel that far, I thought they had to pretty much fall down hill into the sea, any flat lands between the sea and mount.. mou... big hill (Snowdonia) would allow the wind to disperse.

Do you happen to know any good websites to give me a better explanation than my schoolboy knowledge?
