I am considering purchasing a Hurley 24/70 with a Volvo Penda MD2010 inboard and know very little about these engines.

Does anyone have experience of them at all? What are the potential problems / weak areas? How reliable are they? What areas need serviced more regularly than others? Are spares easy to get, how costly are they and are there cheaper but good quality alternatives? There isn't any real service history to the engine and the tachometer doesn't work so I can't see how many hours are on it. Any thoughts or advice would be welcome???

Hi

I have a 2030.

The taco display is replaceable and the hours are stored in its chip.

The exhaust elbows can rot. There are aftermarket replacements.

The heat exchangers can also need a clean. The rubber bots (if fitted to a 2010) might need replacement or a tighten.

Parts for Perkins, Volvo Penta and Yanmar Engines Are very good value!

The raw water pump might leak. Cheap service kits available.

Otherwise mine starts on the button and is reliable!

I think the 2010 is a twin cylinder 10hp Perkins badges as a Volvo. We have the same Perkins engine as a generator. The basic engine is good but the exhaust elbow is useless. I swapped ours for a s/s one from a Northern Lights generator. These engines are fine in the Perkins variant. I cant comment on the marinised Volvo aspect

I’ve got a 2030 fitted to my boat which has in excess of 4500 hours in it: it’s very reliable and needs little beyond routine servicing. It’s had one new exhaust elbow in its life, replaced with a VP part. I check mine every other season for carbon buildup.
The engine is a good match for the Hurley and won’t be all that ancient: it must have been fitted as a replacement for the original engine as they weren’t around when the boat was built.
Providing it starts well and runs without excessive smoke, I’d not worry about it.

Pretty good on the whole. Cheap pattern parts available and plenty around.

mixing elbows are a problem on all marine engines so I don’t think you can really judge it on that.

I had a 2020 in the shop not long ago which had a broken rocker shaft (water in the cylinder from a poorly fitted exhaust system.) Rebuilt and out-the door for 500 quid in bits. A yanmar would be easily double that.
