Anyone have a Volvo AQ151 (or other B230 derived engine) with a calorifier

I have a fresh water cooled AQ151 and would like to add a calorifier. Can anyone tell me where the take off points are on this engine. Even better, if you have pictures I will be hugely grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Mine was taken off the bottom of the heat exchanger core and returned on the stb side of the block, after removing the drain tap and relacing with a straight union.

Thank you Fred, that's useful. I have seen the drain plug you mention of the starboard side of the engine, but don't recall seeing a take off point on the heat exchanger. I'll have another look next time I visit, but if you happen to have a picture, or anyone else for that matter, I would love to see it.
Cheers

Sorry no pictures it was many boats and a long time ago

No probs, I have a starting point at least. I know these engines are old now, but there are still loads out there so thought this question would get a bigger response. Maybe not many have calorifiers fitted.

If anyone else can help, I would appreciate it, otherwise I'll maybe have a trip around the local brokers yard and see if I can find a boat with these engines and a calorifier.

Hi, I have a pair of AQ171C’s which I believe is the B234F Block which is similar. It’s quite tight in my engine locker so it’s difficult to get useful photographs.
The engine with the calorifier attached has plumbing mods so not quite straightforward, Volvo used to do kits but I suspect it may be cost prohibitive on the older engines unless you can source parts.
There are 2 connections on the engine block below the exhaust manifold, the first one is the freshwater copper feed pipe from the heat exchanger to the block, and this will need a take off to the calorifier at the block. The other is the freshwater drain plug / tap on the block modified to take the other hose to the calorifier. With mine the drain plug / tap has now an extended tap so you can drain the block without disconnecting the calorifier hoses. The connections at the block are side by side on my block, level about 75mm apart. Check the plug / tap threads, they maybe ¼” BSP thread or similar.

Thank you. I believe the 171 is the same engine as the 151 so the connections should be the same. I have the drain plug on the aft end of the starboard side of the block. The only other possible connections I can see on this side are two possible blanked ports, one with a big (19mm?) nut in, and the other with a smaller, Allen keyed plug. They are both towrards the front of the block, the nut being just in front of the oil filter and the plug being above and to the front of the oil filter, just below the cylinder head. Neither of these sound like your description, in fact there is nothing within 75mm of the drain plug that could possibly be described as a possible hose connection or port. I wonder if the block changed during its production run?

Hi, I am not sure how useful the picture is, but I enclose one anyway.20180526_095129.jpg

You have to rotate the image!! The 2 black pipes head downwards and feed off to the calorifier. You can just make out the copper pipe from the heat exchanger on the right. The grey coloured pipe is the Sterndrive exhaust pipe so you can see the connections are at the rear of the block.
