Hi all,

Our new boat has come with a WiFi Aerial which terminates with a Ethernet type socket.

Not really sure what it is and more importantly can it be of any use?

Have both Marina WiFi through MDL and my own little MiFi EE box.

Can somebody please explain what this aerial is for and how I might be able to use it.

Many thanks

P.S if anyone can come down to the boat and explain/demonstrate this to me in person I shall provide refreshments of the alcoholic nature :)

If its got an Ethernet style socket that suggests there's a box lurking somewhere to boost wifi [and possibly also with a Mifi too]

In the first instance I'd try connecting it to the socket on your laptop [switch the wifi off] and see what you can find. If you're able to connect, you may be able to hook a domestic wireless network extender up to provide better wifi coverage than you'd get with your tablet or laptop.

Is it an RJ45 (Ethernet) connection or a USB connection?

If it's a USB connection then it would just plug into your laptop but you may need a bit of software on the computer. This could load automatically or else look for markings on the antenna, go to the website and see if there are any downloads available.

Photos of the aerial and the connector might be an idea to open it up for group knowledge.

Hi Henry, think its a RJ45, defiantly not a USB.

Will take some pics when next on the boat
