anyone going to Henly?

We are picking up our new (old) boat from Thames & Kennet on Friday and taking her home to Staines. I only twigged yesterday that this will mean going through Henley during the regatta! Wave if you see Shikara II, a Freeman 24.

We're new at this boating lark... any tips for how to approach going by the course? I'm an ex-rower (thinner days) and know what the eights will be up to... from what I've read, a separate channel is kept open for through traffic?

The channel for you to take under Henley bridge will be marked. The boat channel will be on the left going downstream - it will be slow going.

Time it so you get to Henley Saturday lunchtime(ish). Then go up and down the mile a few times till the racing has finished and then join the boats mooring up on the piles for the Saturday night firework display. Stay on the piles for the Saturday night and then start downstream towards Staines on the Sunday morning.

If you happen to see David Sherriff in T&K then tell him Steve and Liz send their best and sorry we're not there to help take "Univ" to Henley

Many thanks for the tips. Slow and don't stress - like it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'd love to stay for the fireworks on Saturday but have tickets for The Who on Sunday afternoon so need to be sure we get back in time. Shame. Next year perhaps....

This is the first year since 1839 when I haven't been there. They had to get a special act of Parliament passed to start it without my exalted presence. No doubt they will now have to remove the name "Royal Regatta" and now call it just plain Henley Regatta.
Never mind I will be attending the Goring & Streatleigh Regatta which pre-dates even Henley and is not so serious.

The Who!!!
C'mon; between Sonning and Henley you can see Uri Geller, the well known prat Anthony Worrell-Thompson, Vince Hill, Paul Daniels & Debbie McGee, the home that was owned by the Shah of Persia, and famous WW2 pilot Raymond Baxter - you just need to know where to look!

And along the mile look for the Trotter Bros car/boat and the crazy guy with the wicker bath-chair boat.

Fair point. But I reckon the things you mention will be there next time I do the route... whereas The Who will not!

Heard a good story about the old blokes yesterday. A friend's friend wanted tickets to see The Who in Monaco but they were sold out. He lives on Richmond Hill near to Pete Townsend's house so decided to drop a note through Pete's door. Last week a PA called said chap and he now has tickets. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But back to the river trip... I am very excited. This will be our first cruise. I am told that T&K to Staines is quite a trip and it would be sensible to allow 2 days so as to enjoy it. Do you agree?

... but reading your post again I'd love to know how to spot these things as we go by! (Magicians excluded)

2 days is fine. You're going downstream so there will be a small current helping you along.

If you get a queue at any of the locks then just enjoy talking to the people in front of you and any then that queue up behind you.

It's 6 years since we moved from river to sea so not sure now where the petrol fuel points are now but-
assume you have the Ford petrol engine and with a full tank you won't have any problems. If for some reason you need petrol then you can moor by Maidenhead Bridge and see the petrol station.

I'm sure the "stars" wouldn't want me saying exactly where they live on here BUT Raymond Baxter lives next to Marsh Lock. If you get the chance then have a look in the cut on the right of the lock as you go downstream and look for the boat with the insignia on the bow showing that this vessel took part in the evacuation of Dunkirque in WW2 - Baxter owns it.

Once out of T&K and turned left then you are into Dreadnought Reach. On your port side you will see what looks like a road sign; a bit further on and there is another one. These are timing points; if it takes you less than a minute to pass between these points then you are going too fast. At the end of Dreadnought stay well off the bank as the river gently sweeps to the right ; it's very shallow just there!!!!

enley mate. innit!

"Loc: West Sussex "Or we very nearly in Hampshire.
Is this to ensure that your neck of the woods is not mixed up with the scruffy low life area aka "East Sussex",you know the bit snuggled up to next to (whisper it) even worse K*nt. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

damn,

i was hoping to pop in and sample (destroy) your rum stocks!

think it may be a little too "serious" for me, but nothing ventured .. etc.

hope all is well with you and yours.

We have been trying to keep out riff raff for years and people that cannot spell Henley fit into that catagory and should not come!
Also it is Goring and streatley! not streatliegh /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
