......... or watching a 100 or so other nutters doing the same?

As usual there's a swim at the Gosport & Fareham Inshore Rescue Service slip at Stokes Bay.

Swimmers run down en-mass, most in fancy dress at around 11:00 and then exit anywhere bewteen 5 secs and a few minutes later. India Juliet, the coasty rescue helecopter normally does a winching excercise with the lifeboat before the swim.

This is a great opportunity to blow out the cobwebs (& hangovers) and if you feel the urge, to put a donation in the tin. These guys are an independant lifeboat and receieve no funding from the RNLI. They have to raise every penny themselves and are in the process of building a new boat.

Just a few stats about one of the busiest lifeboat stations in the UK and Repulic of Ireland:

In the past 14 years the service has attended 1542 incidents.
To date in 2006, the service has attended 124 incidents.
In July of this year the service attended 35 incidents.

This is one of the busiest lifeboat stations anywhere in the country and is entirely self financing. Take a look here & please come along and support it.

I would like to second Dave's comments about the GAFIRS - I spent a day visiting them on a sunny Sunday in October, and I was very impressed by the whole outfit!

They have a comprehensively equipped RHIB (twin outboards) which sees very active service, along with another much bigger RHIB (twin inboard diesels with water jet propulsors) which is slowly being outfitted by the GAFIRS themselves as money allows - hopefully it will be up and running by the time the silly Solent season starts with a vengeance....

And of course they have a wonderful team of volunteer crew members, all of whom put in a lot of time and effort into making the GAFIRS such an amazing organisation.

As Dave said, they receive no funding other than donations, and I know that the coffers are rather low...... so next time any of you lot happen to be down that way, please do stop in and have a chat - they are a very nice and friendly mob!

Much the same thing happens at Cromer (where I often happen to be at that time of year) and no doubt other palces as well. Here, the Mudeford lifeboat crew play the local club at Cricket all in full Santa regalia!
