We're off dowm to Watchet on Saturday morning, returning to CYC on Sunday. Can't make today, Lou is working. Again, anyone fancy it, we'll be locking out of Cardiff at 09:00.
I'm wondering about Watchet this weekend too. Going from Watchet to Cardiff, I guess folks are planning on making it on the one (flood) tide. My usual passage plan is to leave just before the cill closes (at Watchet, on the ebb) to get back to Portishead, but I might want to go shopping at Marinescene in Cardiff on the way home (so would be interested in views about how people do this planning wise: the sailing, not the shopping).
I think we'll leave Watchet about 11:00 and just enjoy the sail back. Lou and I are experience building, so the more time on the water the better. We'd probably leave earlier, but I'm not good after a few beers the night before.
Alcyone> I saw Ishtar on the end of B pontoon. I was further down B pontoon. I got here about 7pm on the Saturday and left about 7am.
I tried to get to Cardiff on Sunday morning, but the tide round Lavernock Point wasn't having any of it. I think I got there only minutes late, but it was clear that I was getting absolutely nowhere. This was a blessing in disguise as I then decided to sail back to Hinkley Point (contrasting to the motor over to Lavernock). The wind had built and I was on a beam reach all the way down to the Target 7 buoys off Hinkley (and back again). Sunday was a really good day out. Sailing along the Exmoor coast was nice on Saturday.
You should have come and said Hello! We had a few beers with a chap called Mick who has a Westerly Consort there. Allan was there too and Vince and Sheila from CYC. Went to the Ship after.
We left at 11 and had a great sail up to the West of the West Culver. Reached Barry no problem, but slow going then, but great sailing downwind towards Sully. As the ebb eased, we picked up speed and shot round into Cardiff. we then had to wait an hour to lock in, and even then we were three abreast in the lock.
I'm going to put some vids up on the CYC forum later. I think everyone can view it, so I'll link here.
I can't believe we had such a cracking couple of days, In February!
What a great weekend for sailing.i went up to Portishead on Friday with a 15 knot westerley plus big tide Banjo was up to 11 knots SOG at one point.I had a little sail up the River Avon as far as Pill first.Had a coffee in the pill then motored back down to Portishead as the tide slackened off.
Sail back down on Sat was tacking into light westerley but still enjoyable.
Sunday we all piled aboard for a sail on the Bay. Liam was in the St Davids Parade so we went over to MQ to watch that.
Hi Shipm8, in your last pic. there is a post directly in line with the clock... this is the lead in light to the outer harbour from the Wrack Channel, but it's never worked as far as I am aware, there is also a lead in light for the wrack channel proper, it's located on the barrage approximatlly in line with the St. Davids hotel, it's occulting... white for when you're in the channel green for too far to starboard and red for port, there was also another device which had chevrons which flashed to indicate when to turn to starboard when leaving the channel into the outer harbour, but this has been removed as far as I know, at least it was'nt there the last time I looked... so there /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Morning Tony. The sectored light for the Wrach channel is great even in daylight. The post in front of the clock I normally line up with the middle of the group of chimneys when coming through the cut from the Wrach Channel into the Barrage channel.
The light in line with the clock seemed to be working when we went in last Wednesday night. What didn't seem to be working was a directional fixed yellow light when you are meant to turn into the outer harbour (you follow the "clock light" for a while and should then turn to starboard along the line of the directional fixed yellow according to SC1182). We trusted the depth sounder and turned to starboard as we assumed that the directional fixed yellow light wasn't working. That was the right decision! Maybe my charts aren't up to date....
I'm really annoyed about my camera. It is fine indoors but as soon as I take an outdoor shot, it bleaches to almost complete white. Video mode is fine as well. Really annoying, as it was lovely for Pics on Sunday.
Yes, a great weekend. Sunday was the best sail so far this year. Saturday night was very nice and the company was great. Sorry my camera battery was dead. The videos on the Cardiff Yacht club are great, I plan to show the one of Tigger to Lilly to see if she pines for him. I'm sure you were right that she was flirting with him! I'm off to Ireland today, so won't be at the club on Wednesday.
Thanks to all again.
Allan
Here are three photos from my weekend (to Watchet):
Steep Holm with Brean Down in the background having failed to punch tide round Lavernock Point: a gift from the gods
Goose winged sailing along the west coast of Steep Holm at about 3pm
Another yacht flying past the east side of Steep Holm at about 4pm
The last photo shows a reefed yacht sailing on the east side of Steep Holm. The wind really seemed to kick off about 4pm and I had a well exciting reefing exercise. That other yacht was absolutely flying along back to Cardiff.
Yes, I remember the wind picking up. It was about 16 knots for most of the day but went up over 20 at that time, according to my Nasa thingy. Lovely pics.
I saw some boats off Steepholm around that time, but it was after 17:30 that we managed to lock in, due to the number of boats out.
