Anyone ever anchored overnight in Castle Haven (Castletownshend) in W Cork?

I've sailed the Irish coast a lot (I live here after all) and have once or twice dropped a lunch hook in Castle Haven. A nice place, just W of Glandore, in turn 20M W of Kinsale.

The holding is poor (sea grass) and there were no official (yellow) visitors' moorings - on another lunch visit I "borrowed" a vacant private mooring buoy for an hour or so.

I'd like to spend Sunday night there next weekend, forecast looks NW-ish so should be OK (no swell problem).

But anchoring there seems marginal based on the info in the ICC S&W Ireland Sailing Directions.

And "borrowing" moorings overnight can end in tears... :-)

Has anyone overnighted there?

Thanks,
John

I have anchored overnight there three or four times without the least problem or concern. Excellent shelter and good holding closer in to west side, where the pub does good food.

Enjoy

We overnighted there two years ago, we could not find space to anchor but we asked a local who told us of a spare (free) buoy that was well sheltered.

I too can recommend the place. I anchored there for a week a few years ago while visiting acquaintances who live nearby. In a week with strong blustery winds of F6-7, I didn't have a problem with holding.

From memory I had anchored west of the centre line, just up river from the quay and more or less between the large house on the western side and the fuel jetty on the east. When we left at the end of the week it turned out my Spade A80 was particularly well dug in - it took quite a bit of effort to break it out and almost as much again to get the thick and glutinous mud off!

And "Finbar" is right about the pub too. All in all a good place.

Have a look at some photos from a cruise I did back in 2008. http://sailtoanywhere.blogspot.co.uk/2008_09_01_archive.html

I seem to remember anchoring just upriver from the moored boats of Reen pier. We had no problems with holding but only draw 0.8 so may not be a good spot for you.

The photo's are great but we are the prout cat

Thanks Mark.
We'll be on a Hanse 40, drawing about 2m, so I'll have less room..

I was disappointed to read that

One of the two pubs has closed down and neither of the restaurants looked like they had been in business for a while either...

Glandore is starting to look more likely... :-)

Thanks

In 2011 when we were there the moorings seem to take up all of the sheltered space, they may have spread since 2008, we were looking to anchor but as I said could not find space that was sheltered from the S winds that were blowing.
