on gardening duties this weekend? Out there with a spade turning over the soil and wishing we had a much, much smaller garden. Went to a funeral yesterday and the garden where the reception was held was immaculate and prompted this!

I think I've impressed her enough to win a reprieve tomorrow for a sail. Best get bacl out there or I'll lose my hard earned Brownies!

Sadly, yes...

Today was mowing and strimming - the grass was looking very untidy. Tomorrow's more mowing and strimming, plus some hedge-cutting. Deep joy!

Re: Hedge cutting

Too late for hedge cutting you should have done it while it was dormant. 'Fraid you'll have to leave it 'til next winter now. It's a tough old life!

ReThats Nowt!!

Son came round with his tranny van mobile massive power washer. I casually asked him to do the flags by the back door. So he goes in the garage and brings out another masive diesel engined washer and says. Here! It will be quicker if we both do some./forums/images/icons/frown.gif So we did the whole house, drive and cars and garage. Its a brilliant edge trimmer. Got to keep it under control though. Or you start wizzing round like a maniac!! I was piss wet through!!

I was supposed to be on a club event this weekend, based out of Chi, called off for today but might get out there Sunday or Monday (going to Brighton so will have to go say hi to paulineb)

Happily, lawn mower decided it was more interesting to throw oil everywhere than to actually cut grass, so have a reprieve. Next weekend is Forum meet, and weekend after is club trip to Salcombe. So, grass is going to be fifteen foot high and seeding before it gets seen to.

Time to get the gardener to do the lawn mowing..I expect he'll want to be paid for it too.

In for a Penny . . .

1 "Out there with a spade turning over the soil and wishing we had a much, much smaller garden" - You will have the PC police on your back for that one.

2 "Went to a funeral yesterday and the garden where the reception was held was immaculate" - Puting 2&2 in the same bag of Growmore. If the result of an immaculate garden is a funeral, then I will continue to leave the gardening to the wife.

3 Being guided by the forcast, I opted to slosh a bit of imulsion round the hall. It makes it look like I'm sacrificing a BH W/E on the boat.

Re: Hedge cutting

Yes, I chopped it back in the winter; now's the time to start trimming the green bits which are growing furiously!

Re: Hedge cutting

Well, I've just spent a perfectly good sailing day chopping two feet off ours after polite complaints from an elderly lady neighbour. If it dies, so be it.

Have you ever done any fire-training? First time the jokers fitted me up with the hose and then started cranking up the pressure. Legs were like jelly afterwards, but I didn't dare let the beast go and only the wall behind saved me from the dance of the mad python!

I can hardly believe that both yours and my lawnmowers couldn't be used today due to lack of maintenance!

We'll have to be careful here - it won't be long before they start wondering how comes the boat always starts every time.

Re: In for a Penny . . .

Had a development company wanting to buy a bit - I'd have gladly given the bloody weeds to them! It wasn't a particularly long conversation when I suggested it to SWMBO. I'm now hoping the PC police will come and confiscate it.

Positive (Saily) result though. Got her to let off an old hand-held flare which I then used to light the bonfire. Nice to know she can pop one off though arming it was a bit of a struggle, and she was about to put it between her knees to pull back the arming handle. Could well have been another neat garden with tragic consequences!

Ergh! Well my boat engine starts everytime, but the lawnmower is ...how should I put this...temperamental.....not my fault, despite similar maintenance regime on both. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I'll have to fire the engineer who works on the lawnmower, as obviously incompetent!

I think you lot need some help,

now we all know there isn't a lot of electricity to be had on board, well not without a gen set screaming in the background and fumes over the boat, and even more bits to maintain.

However in case some of you have not noticed, there is heaps of it (Electricity) available at home, with no noise or fumes. Safety switches have come a very long way in preventing electric shock too.

I started with an electric lawn mower about 18 years ago, had to throw it away, still running after 16 years of regular use, just that the whole base plate had worn out and no replacement available.

Well, the collection has grown, electric hedge trimmer, chainsaw, whipper snipper / trimmer, leaf blower-vacuum, garden plant sprayer, mulcher and the list goes on.

You see none of these require much, if any maintenance, as rule make less noise than the screaming petrol jobs, add to this no smoke or fumes and no flammable liquids stored in dodgy cans around the joint.

And wait for it..........
Best of all.........
The wife uses most of them, as they all start without a problem, don't need winding up or pulling to start, don't make a frightening noise and bounce around all over the place, don't burn you if you touch the wrong bit, don't stink the house out.

Now if SWMBO is using all this gear you will all have more time for the most important maintenance items on board, or heaven forbid, more time to go for a sail.

Just a thought Tome.

You may have a good point here, though I don't think the electric mower will cope with the jungle out there until I've done a decent cut with the petrol job.

I shall mull it over whilst afloat. HW in 2 hours time and I've won a reprieve. It's a bank holiday Monday. Have a good weekend all.

Re: electric mower

(NigelB replied
I would suggest that your electric mowers last longer cus your electric alternates in the opposite direction to ours.)

Crikey, I wonder if the blade spins the other way too?
Will get SWMBO to stick her toe under next time she mows, will advise re direction............

It should do, ours regularly chops up snakes, goanna (large lizard) cane toads up to 2 pounds and the odd bit of grass......

Have a great Monday Tom.

Haydn, this sounds more like the back paddock, not the back yard, perhaps you need one of the tow mowers we use here, you can drive your car over paddock at about 10 to 15 miles an hour, and it's about twice as wide as the average car, so don't take long, sorry no catcher available on this model.

Enjoy the hol's......
