Inspited by the latest RYA mag, I installed this app (free to RYA members) on my Adroid phone. It took me several attempts to register with java errors.

I used to develop software so I may be over-critical, but my impression is that it is buggy and almost unusable.

Has anyone else tried it? I can't find any reviews on the interweb.

I installed it a few weeks ago. The first problem is that it asks for a username and password every time I open the app. I looked them up the first time, then I couldn't be bothered.

The second problem is that I often see a "safetrax has unexpectedly stopped" error message. So I am not exactly confident in it, I don't think I'd want to rely on this at all.

I have just downloaded the App to try - guess what - does not recognise my name and password!

So I guess it is buggy from the word go.

I've just had a look & it appears there are a few issues, but this might solve the username/password problem

"We have had some issues with RYA logins created before 2009. If you are able to sign in to the RYA website but your login details are not recognised on the SafeTrx App: Resave your password on the RYA website (can use the same password) and this should activate the account in the SafeTrx App (This may take a few minutes to update)."

Hi tony_lavelle, Nessa here from the RYA SafeTrx development team. I’m hoping I can help resolve the issue you described. If you are an existing RYA Member, you can us your RYA username and password to log into the app. Alternatively, you can create an RYA account - https://www.rya.org.uk/Pages/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/joinrenew/Pages/JoinRenewForm.aspx

To help track down the java errors, could I ask what model of Android phone and OS version you are using please? If you prefer to send me details directly, please email rya@safetrxapp.com. Our technical support team will help as best we can.

Hi AndrewL, hopefully I can help! With regards to the username and password, you can use your RYA account to log into the app and it will retain your log in details after that unless you logout.

Can I ask what screen you saw the "SafetTx has unexpectedly stopped" message appear? Also, what model of Android phone and OS version you are using please? If you prefer to send me details directly, please email rya@safetrxapp.com. Our technical support team will help as best we can.

@Bilgediver – can you try clicking on this link? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=safetrx.rya
The RYA SafeTrx app requires OS 4.0 and above. To check this on your Android, go to Settings>About phone>Software version

@wizard – can you try to log into the RYA website with the same credentials? (https://www.rya.org.uk/Pages/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/youraccount/Pages/RYASafetrxApp.aspx) If you’re able to log in successfully there but not the SafeTrx app, please resave your password on the RYA website and try the app again. If you’re still having login issues, please email rya@safetrxapp.com.

To counter some of the negative responses so far....I have just used it on a trip from Rochester to Ipswich and it worked fine. This was on an android phone, a Motorola Moto G. No problems with logging in, the details are stored on the phone.

Does not like my HUDL2, running Android 4.4.2:

"your device isn't compatible with this version"

Why?

Because the app relies on getting a mobile phone signal for internet access. The Hudl2 presumably only gets internet access through Wifi hence why it is not compatible.

What happens when you set up a passage plan & finish up in a location that has no signal? Will it not think you have disappeared & send an alert? Or have I missed something?

The RYA SafeTrx Android application is not available on large screens such as tablets devices. The app is primarily a Smartphone application and is therefore designed to fit such screen sizes and take advantage of the native features on the phone.

Where the SafeTrx app experiences loss of cell coverage and the boater cannot edit or end their trip, the SafeTrx Server will still send an overdue notice to the Emergency Contact via SMS. This will be sent 30 minutes after the ETA expires. They will be advised to call you first before escalating to the Coast Guard.
