An interesting event. They are introducing a new monitoring system for river traffic in London, called AIS. Seems all ships operating on this stretch will need to install it. Wonder if it really will increase safety?
AIS is legally mandatory for commercial vessels and has been for a while.
I wonder if what you are talking about is the newly introduced AIS-B which is designed for leisure users and is ( at the moment ) voluntary ?
It would not surprise me at all if the PLA , and other revenue gathering bodies , start introducing bye-laws to make fitting this mandatory. Makes it a lot easier to identify , and therefore get money from , any visiting vessel. Or is that just me being a cynic ?
